What is the best position for the leash plug on a wide 17"tailed fish, just up from the stringer near the cut out or on one of the tails depending on natural or goofy.
Is it adviseable to have a longer rail saver on the leash?

skip the plug, make a centered glass loop
Yeah, what dubstar said…Super easy to do and gives your fish the full “retro” look IMHO…
Regardless of whether you decide to put a leash plug in or a loop be sure to put it far enough away from the rail so that when you tie the nylon cord loop around the pin or through the loop that the the rail guard on the surfleash is what hits the rail. You don’t want the thin nylon cord that you tie the leash on with cutting into the rail. If you have plenty of thickness in the tail you can use either approach. If the board is thinned out then the loop is the best option. A little half circle from fin panel stock if you have any around suits perfectly when put on with some glass roving and a couple little piece of cloth.
Plugs seem to work great. Personally I’ve never had either approach fail.

how is the glass loop done exactly?

Check the archives for leash loops and see if you can get you questions answered there. If all the answers aren’t there I’ll be surprized.

I would go with the leash loop but i dont understnd why everyone puts them so far up (i do understand… to avaid rail rips). It freaking hurts to stand on thoes things and if you have a leash on it is even more bothersome. I have seen some leash loops a foot up from the tail and i wonder where these people turn their boards from.
Put the loop right in the butt crack of the tail and make it big enough to slide the leash (the webbing and the velcro part) through without having to use a string. Your leash will stay out of the way, no harm will come to your rails and your feet will thank you.
If you want i can get you a pic later. (They made me stop brining my boards to work)
