Thanks to the work of a few dedicated volunteers Lennox Head (stretching down to Flat Rock) will become gazetted as Australias 3rd surfing reserve (after Bells Beach and Angourie).
Tonight will be a fundraiser featuring movies and other memorabilia for auction to pay for costs associated with the gazetting.
I’ve just had Brocky up here editing some classic footage of the Point in all it’s glory. Great stuff and a welcome respite from the whaling emotion.
Being gazetted as a Surfing reserve means the place is acknowledged in legislation to have an historical and cultural importance as a surfing location that should be preserved for future generations.
The blurb written by Brocky for the reserve is as follows:
Lennox Surfing Reserve
Original land of the Bundjalung people, 3 of the most easterly points of Australia
In the cliffs nest sea eagles and many sea creatures swim in the surrounding waters.
The quality of waves breaking along these Points has been inspirational
in the development of modern surfing and equipment.
Today along with dolphins, surfers now share the beauty and tranquility of surfing these waves
Thats such good news…I guess it means the Point won’t become a geriatric seachangers paradise like Ballina. And no more Brick veneerial disease blow-in holiday houses…
Great work by those involved…I bet Chris Brock is stoked!
This is really great news Lennox! Last year I surfed angourie then just after heard the official news that it was made a reserve. It wouldn’t have meant as much had I not just visited the place. It’s truly a special place. Now they’ve done the same for Lennox heads and I’m stoked to hear it. Just wish california operated the same way. Our buddy Ahnold just threw us all under the bus so they can bring in even more people to this area. Nobody cares about the quality of living for the people already here, as long as they line their fat pockets bringing in more. Sad.
That is beautiful where would you find a better ampithertre to show case surfing . I can’t wait for a big swell and you’ve got all the old guys growling at the blowins . love it
What impact does surfing reserve status have on halting development on this strip of coast, especially as there is some privately owned land in the area.
I’m a bit of a blow-in when it comes to Lennox, even when (…or maybe especially because…?) I lived in Byron, but I still did the rock jump a few times when it was huge…If a guy doesn’t have a go, then he’s truly a soppy bollocked lightweight.
Its the getting back in that saw me unstuck:- the only place where barnacle cuts and dings are just part of the deal.
Man, I still rate waves this way…“That inside section is just like Lennox…”
The local indigenous community is strong here and include a lot of good surfers.
There was indigenous input and blessing on this reserve.
To those who have asked being gazetted as a Surf Reserve has very limited powers to control development in adjacent areas, at this stage. It may however , in the future become an important bargaining chip in terms of future planning considerations.
The party last night was pretty classic. Lot of shaping and surfing talent in one room. good vibe gathering.
There were some cool signed Greenough original prints up for auction that i would have bid on if I had the coin.
But I had a few beers and enjoyed the show.
As if to show it’s appreciation Lennox Point turned on the best waves for a while yesterday and this morninig.
Congrats to the Lennox locals and all those who have been blessed with Lennox point in full swing, I rate it the best wave on the east coast, having lived there for about 10 years. It’s a shame that the same consideration could not have been given to Kirra, that maybe can or cannot be reinvented. It’s more of a shame that it’s demise is the result of a greedy determined developer. Don’t ask me for details here, please, H.
