Less than a long board -- Jim, Paul, Herb, Noodle & swaylock's shapers.

Hey Pros. I’ve been work on the plans for a new stick for myself. It’s a little less than a long board. Here are my ideas. I hope to hear some ideas and opinions. 8’8"x16.5"x21.5"x13.25"x2.875" Rounded pintail. Rocker, rails fairly sharp a further than the rear 1/3 soft and rounded in center section and knifey up forward. Bottom: Carry hard rails past rear 1/3 of board, center section toward forward section round rails, Bottom: Nose with slight belly or vee in forward two feet, to flat section of approximately two feet, to subtle vee starting at about the mid point of board increasing into tail with mild concaves in the final ¼ of board. Hold slight deck dome into tail, thin both nose and tail out a little. Wide point 4" forward of center. I’m thinking about 3.0" tail rocker and 4.0" nose rocker but unsure about this one. Double 3/8" wedge cedar stringers 1.5" to 3.0" Double 4oz bottom, 4oz/6oz deck. Clear lay up white fin boxes, future rail boxes. Outline measurement form nose: Nose 16.5" 2ft. 20.0675" 3ft. 20.25" 4ft. 21.5" 5ft. 20.75" 6ft. 18.75" 7ft. 15.875" Tail 13.25" 8ft.11.325" So whataya think? Mahalo, Rich

…Sounds good,go for it!Herb

I’ll wait with you, but til then… I like your board. With the 4" forward offset, it’s really a front foot board. I think it would catch those quick jacking beach and reef breaks well, allowing better control during reentry / bottom turn. It would also ride those screaming overhead walls well. Here’s a matrix which comes close to your’s with a tad more tail rocker, and almost a half inch more nose rocker… good for bottoming out on the waves this kind of board is designed for. Since you designed a board with a wide nose and narrow tail, I’d hold off on thinning the nose until farther forward. Make it officially a nose floater. It will catch waves better and paddle better. And dropping in, you’ll naturally hop up onto the sweet spot. Hi Noodle, “More than a longboard? Hmm…? Maybe I’d me making a mistake keep the nose rocker so relaxed but on a wide nosed board like this I think they enter the wave better and paddle faster with a little less nose rocker and go a little faster too. I have a board with a little over 5.0” rocker and I always wonder what that stuff sticking up in front of me really does for trim. Maybe it helps from pearling and is better in the critcal part of the wave. I’m not real sure yet but I’m still thinking about it. A little more that 3.0" of tail rocker is probably a good idea. I agree. Thanx buddy, Mahalo, Rich

sounds good. mind if I make one? Go for it JR. Guess Maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all. huh? Where will you surf it? Mahalo, Rich

Big ones seem somewhat counterproductive to me unless your big on real tight turns and bangin’ off the lip with 180s. I think 8" would be plenty fin for this board, particullarly with rail fins. Send me an email with the template you think best for it. You do great work Paul. Mahalo, Rich

FL, I gotta go bigger in the tail.

FL, I gotta go bigger in the tail. If you’re in Florida a board with the wide-point forward is probably not too good of an idea. It tends to make the board a little less responsive in slow waves and doesn’t turn or catch waves quite as easily as a board with a more modern outline. I would think having the wide-point in the middle would be much better. I don’t know how big of a board your thinking about but email me anytime and we can talk about it if you like. Glad to lay an outline down and discuss details for you anytime. Mahalo, Rich

I’ve gone to 3" fwd with good results

I’ve gone to 3" fwd with good results Hi J.R. There are so many variables in configuration that affect things it pretty hard to pin things down sometimes. Moving the mid-point forward tends to lengthen the turning radius of a board if nothing else. Mahalo, Rich
