Mr. McDing is one of the greatest posters here, and his opinion is highly valued by me, and he does have a valid point or two, maybe. But I have to agree with SanO’s insights with boards trending shorter, a good looking beak makes sense. Its ethnic, and multicultural too; you guys remember when all the girls in the seventies, and even the eighties, were out to get their noses done? After a spring break or summer, they would come back without the bump in their nose; what the heck? Yeah that’s random, even tangential, but the point Is, beaks are making a comeback, oh yeah, Get Ready!
Come on, somebody call me a beak freak; you better think before you beak.
You're all entitled too your opinions. But as I said there was a period of time in '69 -'71 where it seem that if you walked into Mitch's to buy a Clark everything in the rack was the same. Thick and poorly rockered. I don't remember the length or the ID # for the blank. We made moslty 6'10----7'6's out of 'em. Down railed flat bottomed' slight vee thru the tail. I was a beginner and hated the look of the beak . Other than "cheater fives" there was no reason to have that kind of meat in the nose. Retro isn't really retro. The sub-shortboards You guys refer to of today don't look anything like the old beaked boards of the 60's--70's. They are foiled and rockered wayyyy better. If I had a mentor in those days instead of just watching others and learning on my own, I would have known what a mini-plane or spoke shave was. As it turned out I picked up the sander one day and went to work on that friggin' beak and never looked back
I started surfing just after the period ou mentioned (1973 to be exact) and started making boards a couple of years after that. Talk about not having mentors! My first blank…I didn’t know about the crust and some of it came off some didn’t, my deck was all uneven. I didn’t know what a template was. I just eyeballed the thing. Mine had a beak in the tail too. Now THAT was ugly!
I just looked at an article about Michael Peterson and he was riding some beak nosed boards that looked very cool!
Hey reverb didn’t see you as a beakbeater, MciDing, well he has his lucid moments. SanO does excellent work, and I think his concepts are valid. Adjustments have to be made to the rocker because of the added nose thickness adds volume not just at the tip, and because of this one can ride a shorter board, so that changes the curves in the outline, Its all a matter of a few tweaks to the beak. Certain breaks become “mush” more fun with these subtle changes, like Beacons.
What up reverb. I do shape most all my fish with a foiled out beakless nose now days. Then again I do some with a beak.
My point was it does make a difference very little but it does. Like I said a 5’6 x 21 round nose fish I would add a beak but if its a thin pulled in nose Quad say 5’9 x 20 I would flip the tip with a foiled out nose.
Again a Beak fits some style boards and some it doesn’t.
…Ghettorat if you situate the planshape at some point in those 6 2 s the fish can come out without beak nose and without too much rocker changing, keeping bulk too
You guys are killing me. I’m finally getting to the point where I can ALMOST foil a nose and you’re calling for a beak? And wtf’s wrong with a beak on a chick? Tip the head to the side a bit and everything works perfectly. You guys suck! Mike
Well, in the interest of multiculturalism, I’m willing to give a beak a try. Plus, the chick on Mod Squad, Julie or Judy, I did have the hots for her. And, she had a nice little beak, too. So I’ll give it a try. A little more tail rocker to compensate? Is that what I’m reading? This is serious fricken stuff… Mike
Rooster, I say have fun with it, and embrace it. Watch it go before you while you paddle out, or take off, cut back or the best, checking the beak, while pulling in.
Had to edit the rat here sounds too cocky, even for me, and I wrote it, even though its true.
Check out “The Del Mar Housing Project” if you want to know about the real deal. The best water housings in the world. Still you got to “go pro” for the masses.
Rooster, whatcha think Linc stands for? Never figured out that message till now, kind of like “Star Trek” and its multicultural message. Peggy Lipton was a babe.
That’s sad. I love beaks. I’ve got a few Brewers and a Junod with them in my quiver now. Some of the best waves of my life started with a view of the beak just before making the drop. I’m into cheater fives too. I’m still living in the 70’s
Of the many hundreds of boards I’ve had over the last 48 years, the one that’s burned most brightly into my memory was a beak-nosed psychedillic 6’0" round pin, single fin Plastic Fantastic from 1971 (man I wish I had that now). My girlfriend at the time lobbied my friends and surprised me with it for my 13th birthday. I felt like I was the best surfer in the world on that board.
Crappy boards have always sucked regardless of whether they had beaks up front or not. Some shapers are hacks (no offense to the hacks), some make everything they touch magic.
The noses that I think suck are the super pointy, thin, heavily rockered jobs on modern chips. I know some people really like those, and I get the reasoning behind them, but… I just wanna cut off the front 6" and round them off. If I don’t wanna stuff my nose, I just step back on my tail. I also don’t like the idea of having my eye poked out by one of those.
Yeah. I know it's sad, but that's what living in and reliving the '70's will getchya. The truth hurts. The truth being that if Brewer and some of the other shapers of that era could have figured out how to get rid of those beaks they would have,
Brewer's still putting beaks in a lot of his boards. Not because he doesn't know how not to, but because he says he likes them. I gotta believe him, since as I said, I like them too. Watching him shape is pretty amazing. There's nothing haphazard about it.
The only truth that's hurting me now is that I'll never actually get to relive the 70's or anything from the past. My bright light is that I almost qualify for senior discounts, and the AARP mailings are starting to look appealing ;)
My girlfriend has a sixteen year old that lives with us. It's finals time and all the kids have been super stressed out. Almost every adult we've talked to lately says they'd never be 16 again. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
As i said earlier, Brewer makes the best beaks, and he does still. Kendall’s got more style than about anyone, because he gets to hang out with Brewer, and Linden. My relationship with those guys has been a bit different still I am not complaining, because every now and then I get honored with a t-shirt from those guys; that’s old school team, as I see it. i am stoked just to have been in their presence, over the years.
