I always favored a somewhat low angle beak. Properly done, if you start a shallow pearl on takeoff, the resulting ''airfoil'' shape will lift the nose back to the surface if you keep paddling. Had it work many times, both at Windansea, and at Sunset.
It’s all in what you like I suppose. The history of why they were there to begin with is as I have stated. Guys that do 'em now do it for nostalga. Or they come up with some vague theory about how the beak contributes to the performance of the shape. Any of the boards mentioned by Kendal that were" magic" boards from “the good old days” would have most likly been better boards without the beak. If you guys like 'em; shape 'em. I own a Brewer gun from the '90’s. No beak. It’s nothing personal but other than Guns; I’ve never been that impressed with Brewer or Linden. Sacrilige, yeah I know. Give me Rusty, Yater or some of the Santa Cruz guys any day of the week. Truthfully Randy Cone shapes a better gun than Brewer and Linden could shape together even if they used a CNC or AKU.

A guy who handshapes some beautiful guns and will paddle out with the best of them and charge big fucking waves and he is in his 60’s. I got no idea who showed Reno how to do anything and flipped tips are irrelevant to this thread as we are discussing "Beaks". Start a thread on "flips" and I'll be happy to voice my opinion on them.

There is still an undeniable fact that’s not being discussed: A thick nose is more difficult to snap off than a thin foiled tip. I love beaks and I also love round noses. Chicks with beaks? Why not? As long as theres some floatation in the chest area jejeje!

One of the things I love about surfing is everyone’s opinion is right… for them. It’s great that you think Randy’s shapes are better than Brewer’s and Linden’s. Everyone needs a little love. Randy’s not really getting it from me.
My opinion - the right one for me - is beak noses are cool and functional. I’ve experienced what Bill mentioned countless times. Start to burry the nose and just keep driving until all is good again. Also, when the short board revolution started, people were still walking around on their boards, long or short. The beak gave you a reason to be up front.
Yes, I read it, thats why I wrote: “thin foiled tips” like the ones on the typical 6’ x 18 1/4" x 2 1/4" thrusters.

I’m not missing that… it’s just not that relavent to MY surfing.
I’m older than 25 (54) and still have elders to look up to that rip (youngers too). I have nothing against potato chips. I have fun on them as long as I’m not paddle-battling a bunch of teenagers. I get out paddled by 14 year old girls these days.
I just don’t think all surfers need to surf the same, or ride the same equipment. For me it’s about the freedom and being able to focus on my moments on my waves. I’m not trying to be Kelly Slater. I’m just being the best “me” I can.
Why? I don’t agree. You just need to size your board accordingly. If I take a 6’6" thruster, lop off 6" from the nose to make it 6’0", why would it be any harder to snap?
I dig beaks, on boards, or birds they look good when I am paddling, or sitting out back waiting. A nice beak, back in the day was like having a babe under your arm, with all your bro’s drooling. My first girlfriend had a beak, and she was smokin’hot. Mr Leon brings back another point (point, get it) they add a bit of volume to the nose, so boards don’t snap so easily; my first girlfriend she use to snap through her beak, and a bit of a freak. McDing just needs a good beak to play with I reckon. My friend Reno knows how to flip a beak, and make a fashion statement at the same time, not too many people have the flamboyance or style of Reno. I dig that guy, his chihuahua’s name was Lola.

Don't get your panties in such a bunch girls. I made some comments about "Beaks" that are my personal opinions. Made NO disparaging remarks about Brewer or Linden. Just an opinion about their overall shaping skills. Acknowleged their shaping abilities regarding Guns. Touted Randy Cones' abilities because he's as good as anybody and deserves acknowledgement. You two need to get over yourselves and I don't care who's names you drop. Means nada a mi.
If your opinion is right for you and beaks are cool then go do it. Because my opinions and values are differant than yours don't accuse me of drug abuse. You or Sano. Just go shape yourself(if you can) something with a friggin' beak and lay off the personal attacks.
