lets see some art work!!

So, did you “do” the 70’s , also ?

[ By the way, did you see Paul’s post at the top on how to make these great shots of yours magically appear in this box Josh ? it’s not actually too difficult…not if I can do it , anyway!]

Did you get the issue of ‘Surfing Life’, I think it was, where they interviewed / showed Martin’s sprays ? [If not, I’ll see if I can find it amongst this carnage somewhere, for you !]

   okay mate, catchya !

        ben

pre - Phil and David Byrne days, obviously. By the way… remember their brother Chris, critta Byrne… he and Tom, the ‘aggronauts’ ??

[ ahhh, yessss…

the 80’s , eh ? …]

the story-refrence of warriors painting their shields to custom speifications comes to mind …to prepare for battle-combat wether symbolic or actual is a stellar oppertunity for self expression… leave no surface un scrawlled with either the sophisticated techno sprays or the red dirt and Java plum stains of the neighborhood [.where is that Gary Kingma board of 1969?] Each and every expression a moment in time capable of rendering the cranial circutry of the artist like the walls of the caves at Lascaux or the mosaic floors of ancient grecco/turkey taking us back through the centuries to commune with like minded pictographers un named and unfettered by the stains of life in the material world ,pure images to be appreciated for their essence…aloha …ambrose … wheres me pen young awkins? Long John silver needs to skribble a page or three

Speedneedle,

That fire breathing dragon is a great spray. How long would a spray like that take you to do?

Kind Regards,

Matt.

the 80’s artwork of santa cruz skates’ Jim Phillips…

Imagine these full length on your surfboard !

ben

rick griffin speeded up a notch, or mattel ‘hot wheels’ cars I had as a kid are two influences that come to mind, looking at Jim’s screaming severed hand and similar logos [my mum forbade me buying hot wheels ?!]

… not sure how ‘shark cammo guy’, or the cactus locals, would feel about paddling out on the blood dripping hand full length on the bottom of the board, though.

[see below…

" kirra surf " , 1970s…

and, at the other end of the spectrum to the soft pastels, dolphins and such airbrushes of the 70s , was the Jeff Ho zephyr P.O.P. dogtown santa monica graffiti boards and social devastation featured so graphically in 'dogtown and z-boys' the movie and the book.....

like you say ,speedy, it’s amazing the lack of recognition good sprayers get in the mags sometimes !

All these sprays always appeared in ads for or interviews with (Hot Buttered Surfboards’) Terry Fitzgerald.

Artwork is what it IS, pure unadulterated artwork !

‘Jp’ St. Pierre, also known elsewhere as Tri Fins Are Dangerous [tfad], has let me use his shots here, very kindly. Never ones to blow their own trumpets it would seem, nevertheless their craftsmanship and artwork NEEDS to be seen. It’s inspired me for the last 10 months…and that’s just via a computer screen !! [must look GREAT in actuality!!]

enjoy !

ben

some " Moonlight Glassing " handiwork …

Hey there’s heaps of questions for me, um…No, not sure why bitmaps wont enlarge…Yes, I saw the articles on Martyn Worthington, and yes, Jim Phillips of the santa Cruz artwork is a legend, along with rick Griffin… however, the sprayer who influenced me early was Jim Davidson. fucken mental !!!The pic is one of his from an article in "Line Up ’ magazine in 1984. the other pic is another of my retro single fins. no I have’nt worked out the other way to post pictures.

thanks again for the old advert shots. Anybdy know more about Peter St Piere?

if you pm ‘tri fins are dangerous’ over at surfer, he’ll tell you about peter [‘pinliner’] st. pierre, his dad.

‘Lokbox’, who posts here also, works with them both [ he’s known as ‘JJR’ over on the surfer design site]

You could also look at

www.allaboutsurf.com

I think ‘tfad’ writes stuff about ‘moonlight glassing’ and other stuff. Yeah, if you can email Peter, maybe he’d be stoked to talk to another sprayer, who knows.

pardon my ignorance speedyman, who is Jim Davidson ?

I had an issue [just one] of ‘lineup’ once…the other good mags recently were the ‘australian surfers journal’ and ‘deep’, also…I should look through my collection of them for some good sprays, too!

          ben

bad pic will make more with better light

Hey chipfish,

Jim Davidson is an artist and board sprayer who worked on many labels in Sydney in the eighties before moving up North to the Byron Bay area. I believe he is still active as a signwriter …somewhere inland of Byron. Jim, if you ever read this, post some pics mate!!!

More pics of mine!

I LOVE that orange twinny, ‘speedy’ !

Is that a tint with cutlaps then spray on top of the tint, or… just a really nice airbrush job ?

have you checked out some of tfad’s postings at surfer yet ? I think you’d love some of the Martynesque sprays his dad ‘pinliner’ has done !

    ben

chipfish,

the orange twinny is indeed airbrush on tint - It was the first time i tried Filler coat spray on tint (Thats the “Hot” coat to you seppos) The board was fucken unreal to ride- I sold it on - fucken silly idea!!! If you dont absolutely need the money, DONT sell any of your personal boards. One surf on a board that different teaches me as much as surfing 10 generic thrusters!

I looked at the moonlight glassing site and emailed asking to contact P st Piere. He is about the only sprayer who ever gets a mention in any magazine .I.e Hendrix on Machados board, cover of “Surfer” a few years ago.

I’ll look for the tfad postings soon, but I sat on my damn mobile phone & busted it this morning so I have to fuck around to get a replacement right away or miss business…

Anyone remember life before Mobile phone and it’s “Freedoms”?

nice airbrushing on that board. Is it a tow in? if it was built ride I guess thats the only thing it could be… but it looks cool!

I think the twins are TOED in , yes !!

I think the board is NOT TOWED-IN, no !

Not at twenty foot easter reef , anyway… [not unless you’ve been hitting the speedneedle hard…and even then, I very much doubt it !!]

Anyone here see the dvd ‘STRAPPED’… the design bit in the extras ? [ when Brett Lickle talks about twins and quads for towins, and about parallel fins, speed and ‘cavitation’. He makes some good points about design ]. Plus, the rest of the dvd ROCKS… the foil stuff is UNBELIEVABLE… looks like a cartoon!!

Speaking of which, speedster, your ‘JET’ is unreal !!

That would make a great video water housing out of glass.

Have you surfed it , or is it a 'hanger '??

I’d love to see people’s faces when you paddle out at 6-8’ smooth winki on that ! **

B-E-E-E-O-O-O-O-OT-I-F-U-L , keep up the good work…Erle Pedersen would probably be proud of you !!

“the chipster”

… a BONZER day to you, matey !!

… no fat chicks ! [PLEASE!!]

Instead, give me a rainbow board, ANY day…

   .... 'skinnyman chip'

Death Frog, no the rocket board does’nt go, it’s purely an artpiece, BUT:- Imagine the future of surfing if we go this way. Tow ins are great and all, but they are noisy and pollution riddled. That’s the point, but it is still my fantasy board ! hehe!

Chipfish the Bonzer is Rad!

the pics are of a bonzer I made from XPS/Epoxy, just coz I’m a fucken showoff!!!

what’s a mobile ?

what’s “ADSL” ?

what’s a computer …oh wait, I just got one of THOSE!! [this year…]

Good you’ve heard of pierre st pierre [kind of the french version of " Peter Peters " , ain’t it ??!!]

Here’s a very ‘worthingtonish’ spray of peter st. pierre’s [real name… his son is Jean-paul apparently!]… no wonder they go by ‘Pinliner’ and 'Tri Fins Are Dangerous ’ at Surfer! [tfad’s one of the ‘moderators’ there]

By the way, speedboat, do you know this collector [pictured] in jan juc , with all those boards [ written up in a melbourne paper a few moths back] ? I’m guessing you do…

I'll dop you some 'pm's' [private messgaes ] soon, as I have plenty to ask about re: sprays...would you mind ?

   cheers!

    ben [ the chipster]

ps - keep ‘showing off’ your boards… that’s why I like this place!!

" the collector " …[bob smith]

[yep, there’s a marty wortho or two in there!]

here’s a fish I picked up this summer just to sample and see if I liked the way it rode. It gets a lot of compliments on the paint job.
