It’s a photoshop job on my current board, but this is the spray I want to get on my next board, still trying to figure out the easiest way to mask checks for spraying:
Hey Lawless, nice graphics.
I suggest that you first mask off for the outline of the surfer and spray about 2 shades darker than your final target shade.
Then spray some clear acrylic water base to “fix” the paint to resist taping for the second masking.(no spray bomb can***)
Thirdly, mask all of your light squares with “low tack” tape on the area of the first outline graphic, and you can use high tack tap for the rest.
Now spray your dark checks in a shade darker than your final outcome color.
Now remove all tape and spray the entire board with your lightest checker color using a semi translucent (semi see through) paint. This will only slightly lighten your first sprays and since it is from the same line of “hues”.
I have done this type of overlap many times and it works great.
I can’t stress enough the importance of using a low tack tape over any previous sprays so as not to peel away any of the color.
Also, make sure the board is dust free by blowing off in multiple directions. I’ve even sprayed a coat of clear acrylic on the entire area of the artwork a day before the spray job is scheduled. (professional quality and UV stable) For some reason, the Acrylic clear coats I’ve used take 12 plus hours to dry tack free.
Hope this helps
Thanks for the detailed write up. So you’re saying work from dark to light. I was thinking the other way around but your method sounds logical. So this would be the sequence…
I’ll probably play around with it a couple times on something disposable first. I might just spray bomb it on my current board for the fun of it.
Exactly, it saves you from having to mask 3 times.
The other way around would work to, but cutting out an hour of masking is huge I think.
Just be sure to make the outline of the surfer almost black. I would even use black if I were you. the overlapping of other colors will wash it out. Just don’t over spray the other colors and erase the previous artwork.
Think of it as laying pieces of stained glass over one another. Can you vision it Bro?
It is great that you have the skills to preview your artwork on the computer before going for it. It is a great way to avoid messing up the shape.
Rock-on me Bra
Just want to clarify the using of black in my last post. What I meant by that is to spray black but it will obviously show as gray on the white foam. I think you will need to go a little darker on the silhouette graphic in order to get the end result of your image posted.
If you want a more accurate way of knowing, use a cut-off of blank foam or white paper (paper is less accurate) and spray layers using stripes of tape to simulate your artwork. this should help you decide how many layers of spray you need for any given layer. This will save you time in the future.
It is a good idea to document your spray job so that if you ever do one the same or similar, you will know what to adjust if it doe not turn out exactly as you expected. If it does turn out perfect. you will know how to do it again and again if need be.
I don’t know if your doing a one time board, or if your a shaper so forgive my detail level. Your profile says nothing about your line of work and I’m new to this forum.
From what I’ve seen in here, there is a lot of talented people and I’m glad I finally found a worth while forum.
Keep up the goodies, Peeps.
