I chose polyester resin as the topic for the 3000 word paper I have to write form my environmental systems/ mechanical engineering class at UCSD. I therefore need to analyze all of its environmental impacts throughout its entire lifecycle. I then need to look into feasible alternatives. If you guys have any ideas or links for some info I would greatly appreciate if you shared. Thanks guys. Darren
Be prepared for a lot of denial by people refusing to recognize their level of impact on the enviroment.
Ignorance is bliss
the problmes with it are while it is still a liquid…you want to be searching for problems related with stryrne. a chemical that makes up about 35% of poly resin…
UV hardners cut down on the off gassing time…
i believe once it is hardned it is inert like any ol’ plastic…
feasible alternatives are Aluzine epoxys…
Google MSDS. MSDS is the acronym for material safety data sheet. Silmar (most common surfboard polyester resin) is an unsaturated polyester resin. The MSDS will give you environmental as well as health affects, cautions, etc. Quick check for Silmar:

You may want to be specific and find out which Silmar is used for surfboards. I’m sure a lot of the Swaylockaholics know the number.
