Liquitex over epoxy

I wrote a while back about a ding repair and the futility I had trying to match my Walden Magic’s color (bright white). I ended up trying several different kinds of spray paints (I don’t have a gun) and unfortunately, everything looked gray in comparison to the original. So, I’ve switched to Liquitex Titanium White in a tube brushed over the sanded ding repair. Some questions:

  1. Will this work? I’ve looked through the archives and have seen several messages concerning people airbrushing acrylics over the hot coat then glossing over the acrylic. I haven’t seen anything about trying this with a brush or roller. How long between coats?

  2. Can I sand the acrylic to get it smooth? Wet or dry? How long should I wait before trying to sand it – an hour, a day, a week?

  3. I was planning to use Krylon’s Acrylic Clear Coat (gloss)over top of it. Three to four coats. If this is the right approach, how long do I need to let the Krylon dry before putting the board back in the water?

Man, there must be someone out there who’s got some thoughts on whether this will work or not. There’s a new swell coming in on Sunday, and I’d love to get the board in the water on Monday morning if possible.

i would have just pigmented the epoxy white before doing the repair…did you consider this?? anyhow…

  1. i’ve used liquitex for pinlining over an RR epoxy hotcoat and it came out great. it was sealed with another coat of RR epoxy, which was then polished. go for it.

  2. the acrylic should come out pretty smooth on its own, but a little wet sanding with some very fine paper couldn’t hurt if you need it. but let’s cross that bridge when we get there.

  3. it’s dry when it’s dry. if you want to be safe, give it a day.

Howzit matteogeer, Have you already glassed the ding? I did a repair on wooden surftech for a friend and used acrylic paint to match the wood with no problems, but I painted the filler before glassing the ding. Aloha,Kokua

How about polyurethane. I have a large red patch that my local ding repair guy tried to use pigment but it turned out pink (Pretty cute but it doesn’t match). I think the original color is on the lam (it is one of the Lost MR twin replica’s, if anyone knows how they were colored?).

I am thinking of sanding to the hot coat, brushing Liquidtex red (great match), hot coating then gloss coat? Will this work.

I have done this with RR epoxy and it works fine. Will it work with PU??
