Lis Fish at J-bay

What`s the connection between Fish designs and surf mats? Thanks.

they both haul arse. :]

danny- u said it so perfect! they haul ass--------------*also i guess it’s just the feeling of paddling so slow and then whooooosh u are skipping and sliding.also u will notice the guys on them are just out there for fun little else[smile]

Fun, that’s what it’s all about.Right?

dag toby, you’re getting all kinds of jockage. yes, the pavel quad and canard quad cutaway are some of the fastest shapes around. if you’re lucky enough to own or borrow one you’ll know what all the fuss is about. you’re luckier if he shows you how to make them >>> http://www.mandalacustomshapes.com/canard.html http://www.mandalacustomshapes.com

Because in perfect waves under double overhead Fish cut faster lines than any other surfboard ever made. but mats still go faster yet because they smooth out going over bumps choppy surf better. both surf well in flat and hollow surf. both give that pure fun stoke from rocketing so fast and carving the longest clean turns.

amen Lou, no experience on fish, have seen them do just that in the hands of others but mats perform just as u said. The speed is addictive the advanced 4 pontoon modern mats are amazing.

Where is Steve Lis and has he posted here yet, to clear up this confusion. The photo of the board that Kelly is riding has an Al Merrick sticker, not a Toby logo, what is Jess Faen riding? Sometimes this threads get way off the point.

Ive seen the Fish being surfed. So wheres the proof for all those “amazing” air mats?

No proof…just a lot of hot air :0 Just kidding. Someone should invite Dale Solomonson into this tread. Must be out glueing up mats or surfing some obscure rivermouth. Anyway, I remember that Dale has called J-Bay an ideal wave for his mats so he must have some insight here. Dale, you out there? Rob Olliges

Carpinterian-you have a lot of negativity towards mats. Why? I’m interested in hearing your story.

It had to do with a well known air mat operation back in the 1980s. It was in Carpinteria, CA where I used to live. It was about PG and his significant others duplicitous bullshit. I have no issues to grind with DS or GG. The rest of this story is best left as personal past history. Live and learn.

Solos mats have no glue. Theyre made of “high strength to weight ratio mil-spec nylon and polyurethane bonded via high temperature/pressure chemical welds”. The individual materials he uses to build his mats “are fused to function as a single unit”.

Hey there miggs – you have a lot of positivity towards mats. Why? I’m interested in hearing your story. The grump from Carpinteria was kind of a washout.

Oh, we moved a lot - I was in 9 schools in just the third grade alone. Eventually, I worked my way through school at the Univ. of North Central Oklahoma as a farrier’s apprentice. When I went into the service I was assigned to a top secret strike force I can’t really talk about but I can say we used mats as a way to get around. I’m retiring soon so I thought I’d get into making cloisonne buttons of surf spots that mats work good at. So I was thinking of getting a mat. And you?

Thats quite a tall tale. Humble midwest horseshoer grows up to be an wet-ops military man, then finally retires to quiet life as oriental button maker. Rides black stealth surf mats in spare time. Its about the Zen thing. I`m calling Steven Segal right now.

Rich Pavel ride mats. Kneeboarders end up mat surfing full time becuase they get addicted to the effortless smooth speed. You can have fun surfing just about whatever whenever wherever on a mat. They rule the chop and kelp.

Rich Pavel also makes fish boards for prone riders. Here’s a four footer… http://www.larryobrien.com/skeletor.htm http://www.larryobrien.com/skeletor.htm

Toby is tough to track down sometimes!!HAHAHA !!he is such a refreshing character for surfing. We like you TOBY!!![smile]His designs are proof of this[smile]

Hey Rob, Derek Hynd has generously invited both Warren Pfeiffer and myself to visit him at his place in Jeffries Bay, S.A. He has a keen appreciation for very fast, fluid surfcraft such as the Fish, and hes also referred to my mats as "pure watercraft". I know J-Bay is an excellent mat surfing wave, because Ive heard from a number of my customers whove had great times there. Really good, current mat surfing photos are rare. I do know that Surfer Magazine is sitting on some pics from earlier this year at Angourie, NSW... taken by Nathan Smith w/an on-the-beach interview of Warren Pfeiffer by Derek Hynd. I dont know what theyre planning to do with them. Also... TSJs editor Scott Hulet recently told me there will be an upcoming article on “beyond the mainstream” surfcraft, featuring Rich “Toby” Pavel, Dave Parmenter and myself. John Mellor and Jeff Chamberlain were also contributors. No, I havent been surfing some obscure rivermouth... I wish!! Just working up in my lofts matworks. BTW, the surf here of late has been stormy, w/heavy wind and rain, large W/SW swell, pushing out of control about 25’ to 30` on the outer reefs.
