Lis Fish at J-bay

Looking through the new Australia’s Surfing Life I came across a little article about surfing Lis fish at J-Bay.Lots of photo’s of Kelly Slater on Dan Malloy’s Skip Frye(looks like the one from the cover of the Big Issue of Surfer). Pretty cool.

Bunker Spreckels rode a Lis fish also way back in 1975. Full circle.

i believe its actually a twinzer fish… but who cares. sick wave. sick board. sick surfer. 'nuff said

figure it will be how long before we see a surf mat in one of the mags at a world class break?

The fish is great but it is not a Frye. It is shaped by Rich “Toby” Pavel! [smile] Have a Good!

they’ve not only been featured in magazine pictures, but movies/videos as well…

here the aricle snippet and pics https://secure.surfinglife.net/features/feature1.asp https://secure.surfinglife.net/features/feature1.asp

Sid - you must be joking. Talk is cheap. There are no decent photos of mat surfing at world class breaks. Or anywhere else. The reason should be obvious.

Is that a twinser fish Dan Malloy was featured on the cover of the collecters edition of Surfer (yellow board) and various other publications( did not see Surfing Life) or was Slater riding somthing different.

I believe it is a Skip Frye twin fin.

It doesn’t mean shit to see a world class surfer at a world class break doing world class moves. If it were easy, we’d all be world class surfers. But we’re not, me included. A pro could ride a door and make it look good, more or less. What each surfer needs is a board that’s a little better than he is, just enough so you have a chance to grow into the board’s potential before it falls apart from poor (too fragile, too light) construction as most of today’s shop boards do. If you’re building your boards to last, as I do, they you want something that’s long-term comfortable. Having surved for 40 years (I’m 50), I’m not likely to get better, more agile, or more aggressive than I am now. I don’t need the latest wanky, too-thin, too-light, too-sharp, latest-and-greatest wizard shape that Joe Cool was shown riding just yesterday at Nirvana-land, in the latest fanzine. Don’t get me started about media and marketing. The magazines are not working in the best interests of anyone but the owners and shareholders.

if it’s that caterpillar yellow board you are talking about, it’s a Pavel shaped twinzer-type fish.i have seen it many times up close and personal.

I guess you must be right

you are right, it doesn’t mean anything that Slater or Malloy can ride that poo out of a board like that. what I like(and what i like about longboard mags/vids and the whole retro surf thing) is that those guys are out ripping on boards that I can and do ride instead of the normal thin thin thin shralp sticks. I found it uncommon enough to comment on it. the surf media mostly exists to sell shorts and tees(and now toyotas and rogain and mutual funds). People who didn’t buy into"this is what you are suppose to ride and like" mentality and kept riding fish, single fins, kneeboards, mats, and longboards when they weren’t “cool” led the way to photos of those pros looking like they are actually having fun. Watch- you’ll see a surfmat photo in a mag soon.

I am assuming that is the board. Is that the type of twinser with small fins in front or back? Just curios.

it’s a toby fish he has made dan many of them the best mine ever went was at ten ft cojo[smile]!!!

u are such a clone!! i have seen greenough at cojo going so fassssssst on his mat !!

toby was riding his board on knees and stand up many years ago and he was unreal. He once rode closed out waimea bay on a 6ft lis fish !!!the reason many fishes were poo pooed was because of lousy fin placement or just crappy shapers. A lis or pavel fish is an incredible board.Riding a fish in firing surf aided with swimfins is basically a bullet in TUBES!!

The surf mat looks like alot of fun.

Damn right! I never saw anything human surf that fast. Carving hard turns, flying even in bumpy junky waves. Since the mass produced- marketed body board, mats have been passing into oblivion along with bodysurfing, paipos, knee boards, etc. Sad because their extinction is for all the wrong reasons. You must have witnessed Greenough at Cojo a long time ago?
