Hey, I’ve been noticing on my travels these real little disk style boards, I’ve seen a few singles but mostly thrusters. I’d like to make one, and wondered if anyone had surfed one and could advise on design, How small do u reckon I could make it, i’m 5’10" about 10st and usually surf a 6’2" roundtail and a 6" twin wing swallowtail. I’d been advised about 5’10", single fin with hardish rails to keep drive, I’ve surfed a few single fins (always longer than this though) but only made thrusters before so don’t know how much sense the guy in the shop was talking.
I’ve been surfing my “disc-style” single fin for a couple years now and love it. I’m 5’9", 160lbs, and this board is 6’0". 22 1/2" wide, 16 1/2" nose and 17" tail. It’s 2 5/8" thick…
hey tenover im looking to explore a bit with singles. how does that board duck dive/if at all?..b/c im thinking of something geared for overhead walled up hurricane surf that will get me into waves earlier.
Duckdives easily. Paddles great. My only “complaint” is that on steeper drops it tends to slide out a little, but I suppose that’s to be expected with a board like this. Covers flat sections real well.
Any idea on what type of fin that is?? Or at least some measurements off of it?? i just finished a 6’4 singlefin but fin box is a little too far back in my opinion… almost as far back as yours (in the picture)… except my tail is WAAAY narrower…
Not sure what “kind” of fin it is, but the trailing edge of the fin is 5 1/2" back from the tail, the base length of the fin is 5", and it’s 8 1/2" tall.
that’s a fine looking board and exactly what I was thinking, thanks a lot for posting the pics. how does it turn, can you really stand on the tail and throw it round or does it all have to be graceful from further forward?
I find that it is pretty loose…It’s DEFINTIELY fast. I can crank a good roundhouse on it, but I wouldn’t say that it’s as “flickable” as a modern short thruster in any sense…I surfed shortboards (the modern thruster variety) for 15 years, then jumped almost exclusively to big, heavy noseriders for about 6 years, so that’s where I’m coming from…If you have speed, you can do anything.
