Little dry spots on the laps

Just glassed the bottom of my first board, have to say it wasn’t the most enjoyable experience as the resin kicked a little quick. As a result i managed to get the laps down flat, but there are 3-4 small (1cm) dry patches on the laps. Do i need to wet them now before i glass the top of the board or can i assume they will be wetted out by the top lamination?

Any feedback would be great!

If I were you, I would try and wet them right now before laminating the deck. Maybe add some styrene.

Do you mean mix up resin for the top and wet the dry spots before pouring the rest on the cloth and laminating? or wet the laps today and laminate tomorrow? What is the benefit of adding styrene?

Styrene thins the resin to get better penetration into the cloth, which is most likley semi-impregnated already. I’d thin some resin, mix a hot batch, wet the dry spots, and wait till it’s kicked to lam. That way, you see what you’re dealing with. If the dry spots don’t wet out, you’ve got to think about a plan B before you lam over them, and nothing can be done.

Small (1cm) dry spots are mostly aesthetic anyway.

I'd agree with the previous comment...mix up a small amount of resin - add styrene to thin it out and rub it into the cloth a gloved finger - just pick the resin up on your fingertip and rub away - that will really help work it into the weave if its already partly impregnated...I've had to do this with a hotcoat to the entire bottom of a blank that sucked whilst curing leaving dry spots across the whole surface...looked a bit like snakeskin to start with but the hand 'massage' really worked the resin through perfectly.

Id do this and let it dry off before trying to laminate the top.

In an emergancy and their small spots you could use Acetone as your thinner

if styrene is not handy

Thanks for the advice guys!

As the small dry patches were completely dry (no resin impregnation) I thought I could get away with dabbing some resin on before laminating. I got away with it and it worked. I think I will be getting some styrene on my next shop order, it sounds like a useful substance to have! Regards

Hi NoPainNoGain -

Is this a polyurethane blank with polyester resin?
