Little help please Stewart "E type"

Thanks, just an olphart working with epoxy for the first time.

Question, what is the finish typically, epoxy or poly?

This is a ding repair, does anyone know what Stewart does or how can I tell ?

Edit, the board is EPS/ Epoxy

Well, I don’t have a specific answer to your question, but since no one else has stepped up, I’ll go ahead and tell you what I do know.  Polyester resin has a distinct smell, if you sand a small area and smell the sandpaper, you can usually tell right away.  Epoxy does not have a distinct smell.

Also, poly boards can be repaired with epoxy.  I’m sure someone will come along and say its not the right way, etc., but I have done it numerous times, without any problems.  Sand the repair area well, glass with epoxy, and finish as usual.

The third point is just speculation.  Epoxy costs more.  If a commercially made board used epoxy, it would likely be used as a selling point, and hence, it would likely say “epoxy” somewhere on the board.  If it doesn’t, I would think the odds are it was a poly board.  Like I say, just speculating.

OK, if you know the board is epoxy… what is the question?

Do the “PRO’s” use poly to finish their boards.

Eh, good advise, soon as I get time I’ll “sand and sniff”

HA! “plastic in my hands” cool stuff!

Thankz Huck!

Yeah, sand and sniff.  I doubt they would coat an epoxy board with poly, even 'tho it can be done.  Too much possibility for problems down the road, since epoxy and poly flex differently.  Also, if the customer wanted a poly shine, they make a poly version of that board IIRC.  So no need to finish the epoxy with poly, methinks.  And even if they did - its just a ding repair - doesn’t mean you need to.  You can get a pretty good shine with epoxy, after it has cured well.

Most pro epoxy board i have to repair have a poly finish coat (here in Europe). It cost less, it’s easier to do with good look, better uv protection. I only do it know, in fact no problem if thin finish on well prep epoxy coat. Only cracks if board dinged. I repaired big poly cheap off, but on thoses board poly was used for hotcoat, must only be use as finish coat on cured sanded epoxy coat

If it has a gloss coat, the gloss coat is polyester. If it has a sand finish, it’s sealed with Behr concrete/tile sealer. Most of the earlier e-type sand finishes (2006 to around 2010) had polyester sanded glosses.

I agree with Lemat & atomized, all of the quote “epoxy” boards i’ve repaired have had a polyester finish/hotcoat, as I believe lots of boards advertised as epoxy have used epoxy for the lam, but not for the finish/gloss! Understandable, but not how i do it. Huck is spot on too, you can repair this with epoxy without any problems… Slanj

Huck, lemat, atomized and speysurfer a very special “thank you”!

I get my sorry ass in a knot and my brothers bail me out.

My take is lam and hot (filler) coat with epoxy and gloss with poly.

Mahalo guys!
