Aloha to our Moderators, I think it is a shame that a thread can be locked down just because certain posters bring their personal feuds into it. Since these feuds usually don't pertain to the thread itself maybe the Moderators could just delete the posts by these people. If you think about it the feuders could cause a lock down of any thread which in turn hinders information from real posters being passed on. Swaylocks in the beginning was all about getting information to those who asked for it. I am becoming very concerned about what is happening to what is supposed to be the best surfboard R&D website on the internet. Aloha,Kokua
Full concurrence on that.
good idea. There are some who continually do not play nice. I totally support the Mods. The banishment thread though not “design related” but I was enjoying the commentary. I love this place man. I’m mostly in the archives at the moment but I look here everday being social as this is “my community” as well as surf design related nuggets of info. I thank all who contribute. Don’t go anywhere Bernie!!!
aloha Kokua and Surfer Dave - I agree with you.
unfortunately there have been as many (or more) complaints over “censorship” as over locked threads. There really isn’t any perfect answer.
Maybe y’all can help! I would like to suggest that the Sway’s community be more self-policing as well - when you see an inappropriate comment, mudslinging or politics or whatever, take a minute to speak up and politely say it’s not welcome here, take it off-line, however you want to put it. In my opinion such peer pressure is only going to help. Do it by PM or by open post, whatever. The moderators are not always online and we can’t do it all. Even if we knew how…
Kokua, they already do delete posts, and not just from one or two posters. Its the attention that the antagonists seek, they love showing what they know and putting the other guy down in public,so removal is a much better idea than the LOCK.
Just one little hiccup, free speech. But I do agree that deleting is a better way to go.
hold the cheese please !
How bout a stick of…naw…bad dog !
Swaylocks = Mikes website. If Mike doesn’t want that kind of bad behavior, he can do whatever he feels necessary to punish the criminals.
It’s not about freedom of speech, sorry…it’s the internet, it’s the Wild West. Sheriff Mike and his possie of moderators are the law.
Bang.
How about ban then for a month?
As well as delete the offending post?
Transport them to the penal colony at Australia ?
Kick a fin out?
Make them end every sentence with " My bad" ?
Make them befriend Paris, they all end up in rehab.
Or inflict them with a life long, financially crippling, all-consuming passion for the endless quest of the perfect design? Oops too late.
A lot of people were sick of the Roy/Bill feud contaminating so many threads. Unlocking “Banished” might not be a bad idea but to some, it was just bait anyway.
Howzit Keith, There have been a few times I have tried to intervene only to be attacked myself which really discourages me. It’s right there in the forum rules about attacks and rudeness. Maybe we are a little to lax on these rules. I was once scolded on a website for accidentally asking the same question 2 times ( thought I asked on a different website the second time). After thinking about a possible fix, it would be nice if constant feuders were unable to reply to each other. Another thing to consider is after feuders are suspended and their posts deleted, maybe the threads could be unlocked. In my mind Swaylocks is like a family not a gang. Aloha,Kokua
Howzit Kokua, well, now you can probably guess what it’s like to be a moderator - we get attacked for trying to enforce the rules, too… can’t please everybody, that’s for sure.
I’d like to add, YOU are a prime example of what Swaylocks both is, and should continue be. I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say anything negative, always helpful… Just keep being you, you’re setting a great example !!
i’ll jump on the bandwagon, too.
no sense in letting two kooks ruin a perfectly good thread. same as when there’s two kooks funkin’ up a good break…who is made to leave? – the kooks, or everyone else?
why not have the ability to ban individual posters from posting in a specific thread. when two people start going at it, just block them and leave it open for the rest of us.
and just so this thread can be locked with me having the last word, i’ma get political on y’all…
OBAMA IS A VERY “CLEAN” INDIVIDUAL!!!
yeah…i said it!
I’ve seen other forums where moderators edit posts not by removing stuff, but by adding it. Usually in a bold color or another font and always signed.
A quick word right at the bottom of a post that was out of line would get the point across rather quickly, I’d imagine… Just like little children, if the correction is made days & pages later, it has very little educational or deterrent effect for the next time… I know mods can’t keep up in ‘real time’ and get a word in on the very next post in a thread. But editing is always available…and if nothing was removed the censorship whine would be invalid.
PMs have been sent to various individuals on occasion regarding possible issues. I think everybody has seen what has been going on in certain discussions.
Personally, I’d like to see an “ignore” button so I (and others) could just, well… ignore certain people and their posts.

i really like the sound of that!

Good stuff Kokua. Some of the best threads here have been spirited disagreements…they only turned sour when someone who couldn’t make their point turns to personal attacks. The draw to sways for me has always been the wealth of experienced and open minded craftsmen and verterans of the boardmaking part of the industry.
One of the guys on the local forum where I live created an ignore script for firefox that makes use of the “greasemonkey” plugin for that browser that lets you ignore posts from users that you add to a list. I use it for that forum. www.2ndlight.com. There are similar issues there with out-of-control posters that continually attack each other and add to entropy with worthless content.
id just like to voice my support on this issue. eliminate the problem posters, and move on. yes, i do believe it is a tuff position to be the moderator of this forum. but, as it is said, “the leader takes abuse”. i trust in the moderators judgment. were not talking about an interpretation of some deep conflicted religious beliefs…were speaking about a few knuckleheads with no social skills…thats all.
years ago, i had an exchange student from the East stay with me for about 2 years. on the night before he went back home, i asked him about the differences of the East as compared to the West.
he told me…
“in the East, if someone acts like an idiot, we simply punish that one individual. here in the West, everyone is punished for the behavior of one idiot.”
i never forgot his words…and i think a little of this observation applies to this issue on hand.
once again, i trust and support the moderators.
mahalo…
I’d rather see people exhibit some self control, rather than get suckered into endless, pointless, “reatlity tv,” “jerry springer,” nobody-ever-wins-a-fight-like-that kind of dialogue. I’d like to think we’re above all that.
But the reality is, there’s jerks everywhere in the world. So I believe it’s up to the rest of us to politely say, “we’re not interested” in those kinds of threads, and tune out. See that little views counter? I’ll bet that if it should stop ticking, the thread will die a natural death.
It’s only going to bother you if you click on it.
I would have to agree with NJ.
Why do people think they have to read or be involved in every discussion?
Why do people think they have to make everything nice all the time?
What good is a forum where everyone agrees with everything?
Discussions can lead to arguments, and sometimes insults come out. That’s called passion. Those with the most passion about a subject can be the ones that get the most out of control. From this passion can sometimes come knowledge and new ideas.
Do you really want everyone to be polite and stay in line?
Is this what surfing has become?
Next time you want to ban someone, just remember that these are real people, and this is their personality coming out. Good or bad, should someone be banned because of their personality? No ones getting hurt on Sways. Words don’t hurt.
To those that don’t like the passionate debates and complain, why are you reading those threads? Are you masochists? Or do you just feel it’s your responsibility to be a cop, and put people in line?
Some of the threads with the most complaints have the most views. Why?
Not everyone in the world is nice. They’re just aren’t. That’s how they are, so should they be banned for being themselves?
If you can’t separate substance from insults, just skip that thread. If you just want to put on the rose colored glasses and read nice threads, there is plenty of new board and resin swirl threads to look at.
If you start banning people now, where will you draw the line later. In my opinion, Sways is about freedom. Freedom of speech, ideas, creativity, and expression. We need to take some personal responsibility. It’s simple, if you don’t like it, don’t read it.
I’ll sum up with this:
Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits. The rebels. The trouble makers.
The round pegs in square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them,
disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They invent.
They imagine.
They heal.
They explore.
They create.
They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people.
While some see them as the crazy ones,
We see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
