I am aware that I could have problems with the lokbox jig settling down and getting enough suction over such deep concaves as are usually used in a bonzer bottom.
Should I set the lockbox plugs in before I shape the deep concaves or will the jig still work after I have shaped the bottom over the concaves???
I’m in your hands and hoping you can stop me from making a really stupid mistake!
I’d suggest laminating then installing the boxes before the bottom hotcoat. You should have no problems getting suction on the Jig unless your concaves are really exaggerated. I do lots of different bonzers and never have a problem getting it to suction down. Adjust the rear side boxes up 1/4 inch due to the base width of the rear runners. Thanks Jim
Thanks very much for the advice…my lockbox bonzer set arrived today from Mick - think I have more problems to deal with as a result…
I don’t suppose you could help me out with fin positioning? I could do with advice on distance of centre box (standard FU box) from tail, distance of trailing edge of rear and front fins from tail and rails and also the toe in to put on both sets of fins…any advice would be really helpful.
I picked my blank up yesterday from Tris - he pointed me to the Tris surfshop who are holding the purple Scallop bonzer…took some measurements off that but mine’s a much bigger board with a stinger/wing planned at around 18" from the tail.
Now back to the problem. I was hoping to put a deep concave in as usual with the bonzer bottom and a smaller shallower concave leading inbetween the front fins but I’ve now realised there won’t be enough room to get the concave through the fins due to the lock boxes…should I still go with the concave and let it fade out when it meets the front fin/box?
I’m in your hands!
Cheers
Richard
PS I love your box system
PPS Can’t you design a centre fin box system that is repositionable in the water…without the need for tools and manageble wearing gloves???
Hi thirdshade, Here’s a photo that would more closely represent the standard bottoms that Malcolm puts on his boards.
As you can see they are not all that extreme. Even when he does glass-ons. But of course with so many bonzers being made by different people these days, there are some radical exaggerated versions out there. Just need to stay within the parameters of doable and not doable when it comes to using the system. That small concave can be used, it just can’t be over exaggerated, with sharp corners and such. As far as positioning this diagram should help. Good luck! Jim
