long board laming

Does anyone know when glassing a long board if you should laminate two 4 oz layers on the deck (top) first, then laminate two 4 oz layers on the bottom, and finally 1.5 - 4 oz layers on the top again. Should it be in this succession? Or should I just start from the bottom?

Canuk, What I do is one 6oz. on the bottom and two 6oz. on the deck with a 6oz.deck patch if going to knee paddled. More for a classic longboard not concerned about weight. Also on the bottom I do a tail and nose patch. Now for lighter high performance go single 4oz. bottom with tail patch and two 4oz. on the deck do not need deck patch. Mark

canuk: There are a few options; One six oz. bottom, one four oz. cut to the rail edge, followed by a six oz. for the deck. The six oz. can be free-lapped or taped and cut. this a standard glass lay-up. Other options would be to vary the glass weights; six oz. bottom, double six deck or go to heavier and stronger eight oz. volan cloth. there are a variety of cloth types and weaves, but E,S, or rwg are most often used. Tail patches can be laid over the fin-box area, deck patches that cover the paddling/stance area can also be added. It just gets down to weight vs. strength. Every surfer who considers himself to be hardcore should at least one of his own boards and ride it . You will then understand why a typical longboard cost 500–1000 dollars. H.D. Mc Ding, Maui.

Champnuts the first thing you should do is retain the thickness, and lob at least 3’ off the pig, depending upon your weight. You’ll still get a shitload of waves and if you keep it about 3" thick through the mid and tail, you’ll even catch more waves earlier than the lameass mal crew riding thinass biscuit 9’er’s. Keep it short, keep it thick (if you’re midrift demands), and keep it tight in the pocket, and sharp off the top. Fark off mal boys, you all know you can’t come off the top like a shortboarder.

so many options. Glass botoom first. Then glass top. Bottom needs only one layer. 4oz if your a lightwieght and don’t want your board to last. 6oz is usually the norm. 7 or 8 oz Volan is stronger and 10oz Volan for a tanker. 6 + 6 oz for top is the norm, but SOOOO many different ways to glass the top. read up in the archives Drew
