Longboard center fin 6.5 or 7.5

9’ Murphy shapes, 14" pintail, 3.75" Ofishl sides, me #155

This fall I changed from Fibre Glas 7.5" to 6.5" and think it

felt better (looser)? Does the 6.5" seem like a better choice for

my weight?

Thanks

Lets say all the shapers in the world said the 9" fin is better than either of those but when you tried the 9" it SUCKED!!! What would you do? All the shapers said it would work but you hate it… Hmmmmmmmmmmm… What to do, what to do… Feel ALWAYS wins over any theory… In the future believe in your own thoughts and feelings… You’d be surprised how much you may already know!

It’s all good… Try as many different fins as you can get your hands on. Switch out the sidebites too - and ride single. Move your center fin forward in the box to loosen up your board. Move it back for more stability.

More rake adds stability, less rake will turn faster. Fins not only come in different shapes and sizes, but have different foils and flex characteristics as well. Ask blakestah about his flex fins. If you’re extremely brave (and have time to kill), ask Roy about his tunnel fins.

I personally like my boards loose. I like smallish stiff fins, pushed forward in the box on my longboards. I can do shortboard-style swoopy turns that way. On my thrusters, I generally use the small G10 Vectors - made for smaller surfers or small waves - I’m 185lbs and usually save my thrusters for bigger gnarlier days.

Different strokes for different folks. There is no right or wrong, just what works for you. Go to the beach with a bunch of fins and a screwdriver when the waves are consistant. Get a feel for each setup, then swap them out. Find what you like best. Don’t get locked in to thinking there’s only one right way.

different shapes will have different effects in different sizes. there is no “perfect size”. try the fins you’ve got, and see what you need to change. too tight…go to a smaller fin, something more flexy, or a cutaway. too loose…increase the size, increase the base. find out what works…then report back.
