Can anyone direct me to a site or give me an indepth descrption on how to do these? For example using 10oz. Volan. How do you get the lap line so straight? Thanks to all, P.V.
i covered the outer edge of my board in masking tape, going about 4-5 inches in. then i made a cutting tool. its an upside-down U with one leg longer than the other. the longer leg is the handle. on the other leg i attached a razor blade. now the cut will be a set distance. so i hold the long leg against the rail and run it around the board. then peel up the tape, there is your 1-2" inch lap area. then you flip the board over and laminate as usual. do the rail laps like normal. when the glass is about halfway dry you can flip the board over and cut the excess fiberglass and resin away by cutting along your tape line. then peel up the tape and glass with it and you should have a nice clean lap line. -steve

Place the blank deck up on your rack, take 4 inch masking tape and place the tape along the deck (paraelle to the rail) where you want the lap to be cut (i.e. 3 in up the deck from the bottom). The edge of the tape closest to the rail is stuck to the blank, whereas the edge of the tape closest to the stringer is not. I do this because if you try to place your tape down in an arc (like the nose) the tape will not follow your curve and won’t bend evenly. Also with having the part of the tape flipped up your less likely to lap the cloth over your tape and on to the deck. If you have a problem with getting the tape to arch like you want, you can get pinline tape which is narrow (you can get it as narrow as 1/16") and bends easily, put that down where you want it, then butt your 4" tape to that. Don’t worry about creases in your 4" tape all you want is that rail edge following a fluid path and stuck well to your blank. You DON’t want the tape to start falling off when you flip it over to glass. That has happened to me and it sucks (if it happens you’ll have to trim it freehand). When you get the tape down right. Flip the board over glass as normal lapping the cloth on to your tape. When it starts to kick flip it over and trim around your tape edge with a razor. I usually pick a little section of cloth sticking up on the tape and see how it cuts. If the strands start to pull when your cutting you know you have to wait a little more. It will cut clean when it is ready.
