Longboard drag

Hi, Just changed my 12 year-old 8’9" longboard for a modern 9’6" design. Problem is, the new board seems harder to paddle, and doesn’t pick up waves very easily. I’d catch anything on the old board, this new one seems to drag in the water. The new one is 20" x 22.75 x 17, setup with 2 small side fins and a middle fin. Any thoughts about what’s wrong. could it be the rocker? Thanks, “Fred”

It is slower than a snail on a wave over 3-4 feet, but it paddles fast as can be. At paddling speed the rockers don’t have much effect on the boards. If the 20" measurement is the nose width, it’s way too wide, but it still shouldn’t make the board paddle that slowly. The tail seems to be rather wide, but still it might be the toe in on the side fins? http://www.JimtheGenius@aol.com

Jim, Are you on glue???!!! If you say rocker has no effect on paddling and wave catching I question your mental stability! Please elaborate.

Jim,>>> Are you on glue!!! If you say rocker has no effect on paddling and wave > catching I question your mental stability! Please elaborate. I am not on glue!!! The maximum speed you can attain while padling is so minimal when compared with that of a riding or trimming speed. My first thoughts were that this board will be like paddling a cement mixer, but it is just as fast in the line-ep as any other board with the same volume. Now when I take off on a wave and attain planing speed, I can feel the drag starting to take effect. My credentials/3 time U.S. Champ/ 40 years shaping and have never sniffed glue. http://www.JimtheGenius@aol.com

Maybe Fred’s new board seems to paddle slower than the old one because it’s heavier. Add 9" inches and a few pounds more weight and it could take a little longer to work up some momentum. Just thinking out loud, Scott. I am not on glue!!! The maximum speed you can attain while padling > is so minimal when compared with that of a riding or trimming speed. Thanks for the info guys. Maybe it is down to the increased weight, but the board still feels sluggish. Also, I goofed, the nose is 18" not 20. 20 is at 2’ back. Oops. Fred.

Fred what type of waves are you attempting to ride on your board? I find waves over 3-4 feet are past the range that it wants to work in. I have had it in larger waves, but the turns are to short to carve and the speed is non existant. I have ridden the nose on a few 5-6 footers, but that’s not my cup of tea. Once it’s that big a performance longboard would be the call, but that’s what happens when you take only one board the beach. http://www.JimtheGenius@aol.com
