longboard fin placement

just wondering about the placement of glassed on longboard fins. I was told that the tip of the fin, not the base, is generally even with the tail. is it more a personal preferance where the fin goes or is that true.

James, It’s personal preference. And you have to consider many variables including the shape and length of the board, and the size and shape of the fin, as well as what you want the board to do. In general, noseriders, that require stability when you are on the nose, use a fin with lot’s of area set pretty far back. More forward will give you more maneuverability. Question: why do you want to glass on the fins? If you put in boxes and/or plugs, you can experiment. Then you can find the best placement, and the best fin for that particular board. Doug

I start with the base front edge 12 inches in front of the tail. I move it forward if it bogs through the tail when I try to turn, or back if it stalls too easily. But it never seems to move more than 1/2" from that starting position. http://www.blakestah.com/fins/
