Is a 7.5" flex fin too smal for a 8’0" mini noserider? The tail is a 14 13/16" rounded pin. The fin is a Future Fins Albacore Flex fin.
thank

7-1/2" is marginal if you're trying to rip and will spin out if you fumble your cutback. embarassing...
back in the day, when sideslipping came around, we discovered that right around 7 or 7-1/2, you could crank or slip depending on how far forward you put your weight, and how wide the tail was. And a few other things.
Since you say it's a mini-log, I assume you'll surf it as "classic" rather than try have a big mac, spastic attack. You should be okay with that fin. It's gonna depend more on YOU than the fin, I say go for it.
Hmmm you did'nt say where you surf, this has a major significance on whether your tail will hold in.
When I LB, I surf the east side of Santa Cruz - mainly Pleasure Point, which is a right hand point break. I tend to only LB on smaller days and mainly just cruise.
I don’t want the fin to just work, I want the best fin possible. Any recommendations?? The board dimms are:
Length: 8 oh
Width: 22 1/4"
Thickness: 2 7/8"
Nose: 18 1/16
Tail: 14 3/16

One recommendation.
Experiment. Try short ones, tall ones, big ones, small ones. Lots of rake to vert. Try a keel. Or two.
After a few years of this, you will be able to tell what works best for you.

So here’s the thing. I’m not really a rider of LBs. i ride all kinds of shortboards with all sorts of fin configs. I’m just trying to start with something standard with a long board and work from there. What I’m trying to figure out is, what is the “best” fin for the board i posted above - realizing full well that “best” is very subjective. Just want to know what others have had success with for this type of shape…
OK, looking at your AKU pdf, I would maybe use something like a True Ames 9.5 Nat Young as a starting point, but it is subjective, and others might come to different conclusions.
By the way, I'd at least try the fin you have, and see if it spins out on turns or slides to much.
Mike
OK - thanks - much appreciated
I think an 8" fin is going to be too small. I’d have to recommend 8.5" or even 9" minimum for a flex fin. The difference between a flex fin and regular fin are enormous in terms of performace. I have to go a half inch longer with a flex fin right out of the gate. I like the Farberow flex fin myself.
I think it depends on your surfing style preference. I really like the True Ames L-Flex for a "performance" single-fin LB. Just enough base for drive, less rake and a more narrrow tip than the Faberow so it turns with a shorter radius. I use the 9" LFlex on my 9'-10' single-fin LBs, and the 7.5" LFlex with LBJT sidebites on my LB 2+1. Although, I think with the LBJTs you can use a more narrow base, 7"-ish center fin like the classic cutaway, or my favorite, the Wingnut Cutaway. The Faberow Flex has more rake and wider tip which makes it good for cruise-y longboarding and noseriding. I use a 9.5" FFlex on my 9-9 noserider. Great all around LB fin. As far as size, I think an 8" deep fin on an 8'-9' egg or LB is enough fin. Add 1/2" if you spend much time on the nose, and choose a fin with a wider tip.
