longboard for Sixto

9-6 longboard for a friend in San Diego.

nice longboard, what blank is that from?

care to share any other details, like glassing schedule, etc?

Hope your friend six-toe gets to hang 12 on it, lol

Hey Mike,

That outline looks very functional and love your rocker!

A trimmer for sure!

Give us a shot of the rails and you lam your own stuff, yeah?

I glassed it with 7.5 oz volan top and bottom. 4oz. full length deck, too.Polyester resin. First longboard I’ve made. Lot of extra work, heh?  Whittled out of the US Blanks 9-8 Yater. 23.5 wide. I can’t remember the nose and tail measurements. They’re written on the wall of the Rat Turd Lab.

He’s a big guy. Excellent athlete and solid surfer back in the day.  He doesn’t get out much now. Knee and hip pain. Work, etc. I hope this will get him going again. He didn’t know I was building it. Kind of a surprise. The board is in route right now via Leon’s board shipping business.

Here’s the fin.  Photos shot with my new “Smart Phone.” Yeah!  Mike

Mike - it looks good! Are you making yourself one to?

Hey Shapa. No, I’m not really interested on long boarding per se. I enjoy shorter boards altho I admit it is getting more and more difficult to stay with it. But, it motivates me to stay fit, watch my diet, and all that…I do enjoy watching classic longboarding, drop knee turns, nose riding, etc. Maybe that will be in my future?  I do have a beautiful Pierson longboard if  I get the itch.

Mattwho, sorry I didn’t respond promptly to your question. Yes, I lam all  my stuff. You can tell from the sloppy box install and a bit of weave here and there. This board has a ‘gloss coat’ I wet sanded out to 600, then hand polished with some genuine high quality 3m product given to me by Resinhead, our lovable 3M whore.

Sixto took it out today. Hip pain caused him to belly board it. He’s stoked. Mission accomplished. Mike

Awesome story.  Your board got sixto back out in the water, and stoked!  Bummer about the hip pain, but man, surfers just gotta stay connected to our love for surfing.  I know, I was away for a long time.  Its like a piece of me was MIA.  Now that I surf again, I feel more whole, more myself.  I wonder, if the hip pain continues to be an issue, how sixto would do with a paipo bellyboard, or a surf mat?  Or maybe just continue prone with the longboard, others do it and love it.

We talked about a paipo yesterday, Huck. Kicking into a wave might strengthen the hips, too. Mike

I know nothing of paipo boards, used to have one about 40 years ago, haven’t ridden one since.  But I have a friend who has expressed interest in having one made, if I ever come across a design.  I hadn’t given it much thought since, but if you come up with a paipo design for your buddy sixto, it would be great if you would post up here, I would be very interested in what you come up with, and maybe I can get a friend out in the water too!

Huck you may find   (    Hawaii paipo designs  )   I think that is the web site  , interesting .

thnx!  I’ll check it out

Rooster, hats off to you.  Not so much for the great looking board but for helping a friend re-gain his stoke. Your generosity and thoughtfulness  are rare these days.
