Longboard? General info:

I’ve started talking to local shapers about making me a new longboard. I wanting a 9’6" with a 19" nose, 23" wide, 16" tail with parrell egg rails flowing into a hard edge tail. As I live in Fla. I’m wanting to keep the rocker something like 2"-2 1/2" in the nose, a nice almost flat midsection, and a nice kick tail flip @ 4"-5".

I’m 6’2" 180pounds

Do these #'s sound good for a Fla longboard?

Which blank do you guy recommend? I’m thinking the 9’9"H or 10’1"Y

Now to glassing the board. As I want a strong board and not caring about weight so much. Should I ask for 6+6 top W/ 6+4 bottom glossed or could I go 6+6+4 top w/ 6+6 bottom and no gloss?

I ride epoxy skimmers. All of them with epoxy gloss coats have at one point started to peel off the glass. So, if I would choose a epoxy layup would that effect the answer about glossing the board?

Does gloss really add strength?

that’s almost exactly the same specs as the board i’m just starting on now. cutting it from a 9’9"W, classic weight. glassing 6+6+patch deck / 6+patch bottom w/ RR epoxy resin and a gloss.

where in florida are you? who are you talking to about building the board?

Sol,

So, you are in Boca Raton and started to build a like board? Well maybe I ought to talk to you. I live in Boynton Beach directly behind the inlet. If you would ever be interested in meeting up sometime just let me know.

I have talked to Mickey Miller and Nomad surfshop. Have been told to talk to a Stu Sharpe. I haven’t gone over any exact #'s yet. Just feeling around to see who takes an interest in what I really want.

This board is something I wanted to build, but building my boat has taken tooooo long and I’m almost to the point to pay someone. Check out my old boat pics. It’s now all glassed in and waiting to complete the fairing process.

Here is another pic of some of the glass work. It’s 18oz biax with garamite filler coat.

build it yourself, man! my project has been put on hold because it’s waaaayyyy too hot and humid to shape outside. i need to find myself an airconditioned workspace and QUICK! if you’ve got the space, maybe you can get yourself a blank and we’ll hack 'em out side-by-side?

nice job on the boat, man. in fact, glassing is my weakest aspect of this whole board-building thing. maybe you could teach me a thing or two.

Although I have spread over 4 gallons of epoxy by hand, but the idea of wrapping rails is still scarey as I have never done it before. All I can keep thinking is multi-layers of 4oz or 6oz has to be much easier than the 18oz I’ve been playing with.

Sol, I wish I still had a place to work that’s inside. I layed out, cut, erected, and glassed in a single wide garage, but sense I have moved from Lake Park to Boynton for my wife to be closer to work. Now i work on it at work when ever i can.

Trust me I really want to build it myself. I just may do it if I don’t order it first. I have nice longboard to hold me over, but you know how it is.
