longboard glider rocker

hey guys i bought this 9,9 blank with the idea of shaping a noserider but the more I read up on noserider rockers the more I think I should get a blank with a rocker more suited to noseriding.

So i guess I was thinking of shaping the blank i have into more of a glider/ curiser board. what would you guy said would be some good rocker numbers for a 9'8 longboard. was planning a rounded pin tail

I guess i was thinking to make it easy I would following the rocker already set in the blank what are you guys thoughts on that

the blank rocker is the same as the one in the pic below.

I plan to surf it in knee to shoulder high waves ( Max )

any comments would be great

Hi Ant, Gliders' typically have flatter rocker. Seems this blank has a lot of curve fore and aft. If I read correctly the nose is 5" and tail exceeds 3". On a real long one like 12 to 13 feet this curve might be okay but to me on a 9'8" board it is a little severe. The flatter the faster...hence "glide". I didn't see the max thickness but doubt you can flatten it much to achieve what you are after. GOOD LUCK.

thanks tblank I was wondering that. I got the bank for a bargain and did not really look at the rocker in it when i bought it was a impuse buy! what I may do it drop the length down to 9ft and that would help me lose some rocker or I will look at shaping a 9'2 or 9'4 HP longboard .

even cutting it down I think I would have a hard time getting nose much below 4 inchs  and the tail below 3 inches. I would be thinking a glider  of that lenght would want to be nose 3 1/2 and tail 2 1/2

any thoughts on the numbers the board is 3 5/8 thick

cheers again guys

Hi antony -

I just made a recommendation to llilibel on increasing rocker.

You might be able to do something like spread your racks as far apart as possible (or set up some saw horses), screw a tiny eyehook in the stringer at or a bit ahead of center and hang a weight from the hook while glassing.  The glass tends to tighten a little anyway and it usually doesn't take a whole bunch of weight to tweak the rocker a bit.  The combination of weight and glass tightening will undoubtedly straighten it out some.

Peter Rijk posted a diagram on a way to tweak rocker many years back - stringing glass fibers over the blank which gets pulled in to a rocker bed while glassing is done. http://www.quivermag.com/node/711

Surfersteve posts a similar way on his website... see section 11 (bending foam) - he uses drywall anchors or cord through the board to attach weights at the ends to increase rocker.  http://www.surfersteve.com/polystyrene.htm

Hanging weight at the center with the bottom side facing up will reduce rocker.  With a stringer in place it will require more weight and having the glassing stands as far apart as possible.

i think your best bet is to go for your 9’4 HP longboard, that will be the easiest kind of board to get out of that blank

just my 2 cents

I get blanks from clients all the time that are overly rockered. I knock down the nose and tail from the deck, flip it over and find where the rocker breaks the hardest at each end and take the meat out of it between those two points. After that it is, blend out the bottom and get rid of the skin on the bottom of the nose and tail, you’ve got a new rocker

I agree with Jim

shape out the rocker

if you torque the rocker out it could spring back when the board gets a good sun tan

my 2 cnts

thanks guys I going with jims idea and will try shape out some of the rocker I think that combined with shortening the blank should work for me
