Longboard Magazine

Not trying to start a rumour. Was wondering if anyone had heard anything about them?

They ran out of gas!

That is really too bad. I am so sorry to hear that. The one forum in printed media that those of us who shape a considerable amount of longboards had access to for advertising, recognition of those in the industry and just general info. I had advertised in the “Board Forum” previously and hoped to in the future. Sad day. Sign of the times? Lowel Little Hawaii Surf Designs

The main stream surf mags will need to be more diverse with a Longboard Section.

Longboard Magazine was a pretty cool rag. Someone could bring it back with some funny money in a couple of years?

They could have done 6 issues a year or just down sized a bit? However the advertizing budgets have been cut at a lot

of companies who were funding the rag. I’m sure there were other factors involved as well?

Yeah, I think advertising cutbacks are what got’em. I ran a board in the Board Forum, it cost $600. They were pretty disappointed when I couldn’t do more later. Can you imagine what a two page spread must have cost people like Weber? I think these kinds of Mags can take a lesson from Surfers Journal; Get your subsistence from subscribtions. Anything above that in the way of advertising or news-stand sales is “cake”.

Mike Aguirre former of Longboard is starting a new mag called morSurf that will feature the alternative surfing arena.

I like the idea of a magazine that covers everything alternative like fish, bonzers, single fins, hulls, logs, alaias, mats, whatever. He could even throw in thrusters, but only small amounts of them. He needs to ditch the SUP portion of the mag. Most surfers hate those guys and don’t want any part of it. It’s just not the same, and the only people that don’t understand it are the small percentage doing it. Disassociate with that crap and he stands a chance. If he really wants to be a part of the SUP world, start a SUP Mag.

well, at this point in time it seems that Longboard mag is very dead and morsurf didn’t make it through birth.    too bad we need alternates to -ing and -er which are just soft goods catalogs for teenagers.

anyone want to buy a complete set of Longboard mag?      ;-)

It's a real shame.. one of the more intelligent reads and my personal favourite over the years. Kinda ran out of steam towards the end.. more given over to contest results and features on the islands all the time.

Now we don't have a longboard magazine at all here in the UK, even though 9ft + boards far out-number other water craft in our line-ups. The crappy mags selling advertising space to fashion driven teenagers still think they can sell their threads to dorks by using images of shortboards and bikini wearing girls.

We're kind of invisible to the ad men once we turn thirty huh?

Anyway.. enough bitchin. Someone bring us back a decent longboard mag, and not an on-line mag either, just a proper tangible 'hold in your hand' and keep on a shelf magazine.

Grrr.... getting old huh?

I was a rep for them.  I have an entire unopened box/case of the very first issue.  I have thought about selling it.  I think Longboard Quarterly bought them out.  I wonder how the owners are doing?  Hope well.

Howzit solosurfer, Was the owners last name Motil? If so his brother lived on Kauai and was a good friend of mine but moved to Fiji a couple of years ago and haven't seen or heard from him since. Aloha Kokua

What about SLIDE mag, do you get that there?

Dave---I've heard  Slide is a good read.  Have never seen it in any shops or newstands.  Gonna "Google" it and see if I can get my hands on a few issues. Is Pacific Longboarder still in print?   Was Chris Bystroms mag?  Right?  That's a spot in the lineup that hasn't been filled since the loss.

Bob and Rita Bohannon sold Longboarder to Longboard quarterly which I think became longboard.   I could be wrong, It’s been a long time. Yes, I believe the name of one of them was Motil.

I was wondering why I haven't seen one in a while. Oh well always liked the magazine.

C K   Shows his inherit class by only using his initials, but if you know the dvds of which he speaks:  you know who he is and the super quality (dare I say?)  ART  that he creates.  I don't really know how to put it into words.  Bud Browne, Grannis,  Doc James, Stoner, Brewer, a few others and Chris Klopf. His images (photos) expressed the soul of West Coast Mainland surfing.

Howzit solo, I have the first mag of one of the longboard mags and it's the one with Rich Chew on the cover, maybe one day it might be worth a couple of pennies. Aloha,Kokua

Probably will post something later over on GD, but I ran across a couple of new to me “rags” on a recent trip to Barnes and Noble.  I don’t believe they were mentioned previously.  “Foam Symmetry” is an Australian publication.  Strictly Longboard.  Looks good.  They sponsored the Malibu MSA Contest in 2013 and are locked in to do the same in 2014. Recently on B&N’s shelve for the first time.  Another magazine is “Beached Days”.   General surfing.  Not a lot of adds.  Some good interveiws with a couple of heritage and Industry types.  An article by Dibi Fletcher.  An interveiw with one of the longest running Sanders in the Industry Kenny Mann.  Another with a young Single Fin shaper; Ellis Ericson.  Both mags are worth a look.
