longboard wide point and thickness

I am working on a 9’9" traditional longboard. I have a design question.

Should the wide point line up with the thickest point?

Also, should this also line up with ‘apex’ of the rocker, or in other words, with the transition between nose and tail rocker.

Cheers, Dan

i think if its going to be a summer board i would put the wide point a little bit behind of center. maybe 2 or 3 inches. as for the thick point i put it at center or maybe a little bit behind. a board that is that long isnt going to have a problem with paddling. and maybe a little bit more tail rocker.

I’d thnk there is no conventional thought on placement of widepoint, thickness placement, or ratios.

Every design change affects performance, and it’s always a compromise that we are seeking.

Some traditional logs are WP well forwards, up to a foot.

Others are WP back.

Then thickness depends what performance characteristic you are looking for.

For small waves, WP back, thick back, wide, flatter rockers and flatter bottoms across.

This is all good. Thank you. I think I have a good idea of what i’m going to do. Cheers.

Here is my new template. Its been refined about a thousand times but i think i’ve settled. Old schooool. Here’s the specs.

pod - 8 5/8"

tail - 17.5"

width - 23"

nose - 17.25"

wp - 6" aft of centre

I’m going to make mine 3" thick with about 3 1/2" of nose and tail lift. Thanks to all those who helped.

Nice outline. What program are you working with?

thank you. Its taken a while to get it just right. i think i am happy with this one. I use Adobe Illustrator. It works good for me. Cheers.

looks like one helluva wave-catcher to me. good luck, man…have fun with it.

Yeah, looks like the Harbour Wave HOG model, the one for surfers who need every wave.

If you have problems with late drops, you might narrow the tail block just a little more, to give yourself a chance at keeping the forward rails from catching, and to free the nose on late, steep drops.

As is, a real wave hog.

Mr. Hunt,

Some people have mentioned the wide tail on my template and i have noticed that your boards have also got a very wide tail, i have never riden one of your boards but i thought i’d ask what your feelings on wider tails are. I’m personally quite happy with it. This board is meant for log riding in underhead summer waves. Nothing very steep or fast.

What it comes down to is your enjoyment, IMHO. Since you’re happy with it, it doesn’t matter if anyone thinks it’s too wide - they’re not surfing it. I wear a size 10 1/2 in Converse and generally enjoy the wake from a 14 1/2" - 16 1/2" tail, depending on the board and surfing. FYI, I believe Velzy still offers a 17"/17 1/2" tail on one of his models. Again, good job on the outline.
