Looking for a traditional fish template

I weigh 190 lbs and am 6 feet tall. As far as shortboards I have been riding standard 6’5 thrusters that are 19 inches wide and 2.5 inches thick. I would like to shape a traditional fish and am looking for suggestions on dimensions as well as templates that I may enjoy. Does anyone out there have any suggestions. I have ridden modern fish hybrids but can’t wait to try something more traditional. Please help.

Steve Lis fish template can be pulled from the book “Surfboard Design and Construction”.

You can find a pdf of the book on my web site: http://fundingcashflow.com/surfing/

Figure out what size and scale it up.

Im no expert…so use this if no one more exerienced comes along

but im about your size…a little bit lighter and recently shaped a 5’6 twin fin that turned out excellent

somewhere around 16" x 21" x 16.5" was what i used…i brought the wide point a good way up on the board and also left a lot of thickness in the nose and it (despite its size) catches waves pretty easily…and rides them to death… the rail shape and thickness depends on your preference…mines about 2.5 thick and has fairly hard and low rails…it holds great in the pocket and down the line…and with a step back turns on a dime

a classic looking swallow tail is 10" wide point to point and 5 inches deep

good luck

Icarus,

I PM’d you last night. Send me and address and I’ll mail a template if you like. Mike

I came up with my fish template by using the tail curves of my egg (jpg)for the nose and the nose curves off my HP longboard for the tail. I can then stretch those two templates to make 5’ to7’ fishes. I also run with a 12.5" tip to tip tail. I think as long as the template draws up fish shaped board it should work ok. (wider point further forward).

Good luck with what you get. Don’t forget to show us!!

cheers Joe

That would be great. I will PM you my adress. Thank you so much.

I was thinking of doing something similar using the nose of an old campbell bros board. How does that fish ride? She looks sweet.

Board goes really nice, It’s my travel board now which means I only have to take one board with me as I ride it all the time. Goes go in anything up to double overhead (haven’t had anything bigger at the mo.)

I’ve done myself a 6’2" for sloppy windwaves at my local break as well (boscombe pier south coast UK if you want to look it up.).

It’s not everones cup of tea but it suit the type of surf and surfing I want to do in my older age!!

Let me know if you want some measurements

cheers joe
