looking for info on this Skip Frye "Fryed Egg" Shape

Looking for anyone with info on this skip frye shaped G&S surfboard[img_assist|nid=1049672|title=bottom|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75][img_assist|nid=1049674|title=nose|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75][img_assist|nid=1049675|title=top|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75]

Uhmm - I hate to admit to it, but my eyes are getting old. Could you possibly repost those pics larger, or give links to the full-sized versions? Oh, and maybe a few dimensions? Thanks.

Meanwhile, G&S sold something called the 'Egg' at one time, this could be one. It was contemporary with the Weber Pig and similar in some ways. If I remember right they had the bang-in Gudance Systems fins and it's entirely possible that somebody had a Frye-tweaked Egg made, with his mark on it.

Hope that's of use

doc...

dimensions are 6’4" x 22".  Not too sure how to  make the pics any bigger but I’ll try and figure it out.

Thanks, Chad,

The dimensions, the G&S logo and the fin shape are right for that board and that model. It may have an old Guidance Systems fin in it, most did.

Or maybe one made a year or two later as a special order: buddy of mine had a repro Farrelly Stringerless made around then as a special order from G&S, and itt came through with both the correct decal or the model and a set of Skip Frye's wings on it. If it's not a Guidance Systems fin in there, that might be what it was, a factory reproduction.

I'd say Frye was the 'master shaper' at G&S in that era and did a lot of the specials and unusual jobs.

Hope that's of use...

doc...

extremely helpful, thanks so much Doc! Any idea of the year?

Uhmmmmm - gawd, 1971-2 or so? In the G&S line they were more or less the next model after the Magics.

doc...

Thanks so much Doc! Really appreciate all of the knowledge!

cheers

(chuckling) no big deal, I just happened to be around then and kinda took it on through osmosis. We got the G&S line the year the Eggs came out, I think, We had a few Magics too, but the Eggs were the ones we really started G&S with.

Looks like an FU box, to me.

Board’s kind of beat, too. Shame…

Now THAT’s an egg.    I positively love the shape.

what a beautiful shape - any chance of some more detailed rocker/foil/rails shots? I’d love to try shaping an egg in this style. thanks

No doubt. Skippy eggs were special.  Steve Forstall gives him credit for many of his early outlines.  Stall eggs look so close.  I have owned a couple of Skip boards.  Wish I didn’t sell the last 9’2’’ egg long board.

Hey Finlay, I’ll take some more pics of the board this weekend and post.

SammyA, how did you enlarge my pics? I’m a dummy when it comes to that. would I open em in iphoto and enlarge?

Stoked on everyone’s comments on this board. I don’t actually own it but talking with a guy on craigslist and he’s asking $350 but I have a Channel Islands Rob Machado Single fin that he wants to trade for. I’m interested but it is in pretty bad shape. BUT I’ve always wanted a Skip Frye and it would be a fun board to ride and with it being in that shape, I wouldn’t baby it too much. And I don’t really ride the CI very often. It’s going to be a tough decision.

I do own a Peter Daniels Hobie that I believe is south african shaped hobie that’s a 6’4" double winged swallow tail, 6’6" Gerry Lopez Lightning bolt, 5’8" nectar Twinnie and a 6’8" “Ocean Crystals” Clyde Beatty Jr. twinnie that has wooden twin fins. I’ll post some pics of them soon as well.

$350 for that? No way. It’s nearly trashed.

I like the shape, but not $350 worth.

I wouldn’t pay $350 for it either, but I’m trading him a Channel Islands Single Fin that I only paid $200 for. so I’m really only paying $200 for it. I’ve got a buddy here who does amazing restorations, so I’m considering it. The shape is just so sick. $350, no way but I’ll take a look for $200.

I don’t know why your pics displayed so small. Seems to be a common glitch here. If you look at the image location, it is :

…which is the thumbnail version. By removing “.thumbnail” from th URL and re-linking with the right tags, you get the full size.

The URL for full size is:

Also, the year for that board would be around 73-74. I will look it up later today. No time right now.

Just to set things straight: The next model after the Magic was the Gypsy (Gypsy Rider, Super Gypsy and Li’l Gypsy). And the short lived “Easy Rider”.

If the boards has wings it was shaped by Skip, unless of course the wings were put on by mistake. See above. With that many boards going through the factory a lot of things could happen. I remember a board with G & S on one side and Surfboards Australia on the other side. That one went straight to the PB Surf Shop.

We had six or seven full time shapers in those days and all were “Master Shapers”. Skip was our surf star and one of the first “Surfer Shapers” in the sport/industry that was world class at both (and he still is). Here’s a video clip of Skip designing/testing your board.

Skip mostly shaped his model which kept him pretty busy. Occasionally an order would come in for a Magic, or Gypsy with “Skip shape” on the card. Sometimes Skip would shape them and sometimes not. There was a period of time when you would see shaper’s initials on the boards but Larry put a stop to it after a while.

Other shaper’s (late sixties early seventies) included Paul Bordieri (head shaper), John Holly, Rusty Preisendorfer, Dennis Benadum, Chuck Erickson, Hoy Runnels, Steve Seebold. Who am I forgetting? Some of you lurkers out there (you know who you are reading this over your coffee this morning) email me at bill@balsabill.com. I’m old enough for Social Security now and my memory is starting to go.
