Looking for Work in Australia.

Hey Guys,

I’ve got a flight booked to head down to Sydney, Australia for Feb. 22. I’m planning on staying for a while (I have a 1 year visa at the time) to live in the climate of my dreams, and am obviously going to need a job to feed myself!

I’m wondering if any of you ‘informed’ swaylockians might know of any builders/shapers/shops in OZ that are on the look-out for some good quality labor. I was planning on heading north to Byron Bay, but I am more than willing to locate anywhere a buck can be found! Heck, even recommendations for towns with a surplus of surf industry is appreciated.

I have experience in most aspects of surfboard manufacturing, but I really specialize in more ‘modern’ building techniques such as: vac bagging and mould/tool making. I also have a good deal of airbrushing experience.

To make things clear, I’m not one of these ‘train me to be top shaper’ kooks… I’m simply looking for work in the industry that I love.

Again, any and all advice or leads are much appreciated.

Cheers,

Alex

Contact the foam or resin suppliers on North Coast this would be the fastest way to get set up with someone.

Cuttie: thanks, good advice.

Ambrose: I don’t think I’ll have too much trouble… the visa I have makes it perfectly legit for me to work there. Canada/Australia relations are pretty tight. You should see all the Australians who are employed in the Canadian Rockys… I sort’a figure it’s a commonwealth trade…

Cheers,

Alex

contact the blank manufacturers when you are here, they often have a message board and they know the industry. they will send you places.

Ambrose: Yes, loyalty to the queen does actually have a few advantages! I’ve sent Bert a PM.

Miki: Good plan… I’ll check out the blank mfg’s for sure.

Cheers,

Alex

I knew a guy who went there and got a job polishing for a board builder. The board builder had just let go of their old polisher before he got the job. The old polisher got wind from his buds who still worked there that he’d been replaced by some Yank and called the Aussie INS. They nabbed him and put him on the first flight back to Hawaii.
