Oh yeah…The board is a beauty. Ride it. It was made during a time riding was the main goal. Have fun.
forgive them father they know not what they do…
build a new one, wreck that
I have an old lighnting bolt , my dads from when he visited my mom in hawaii circa 1980 pristine condition has seen the ocean three times since then. I am gonna ride it once now that i am good enough and then make a replica. but the craftsman ship is soooooooo good.
i like that. you speak the truth. that board is best in a museum. this retro love thing is outta hand. i’d sell it for sure. but i want to be one of those rich kids lee’s talking about.
At this point in my surfing existance, I don’t own a working thruster. I gave up on them. Granted most of what I ride is 9’+ but this Lopez is a fat boy’s gun!! Yes, a small fortune, And I’m gonna ride it. When somebody lays down $1200 on a Tyler or a Cooperfish, should the hang it in the den?
Last time it got to 10 foot here, the current was running like a river. I was on another '70 throwback. Pristine little 6’8" pintail. I was wishing for a little more board. This lopez is 6’10" and thicker thruought! I’m stoked. I’m about 190 and 5’6". I need a little bit extra. I’ve even got a fin bolt with the loop in it. Anybody got a few extra of those? I have one I have to move around to whatever board.
I remember awhile back on this site, somebody had dredged up some sick Hawaii gun. He saw showing his find and feeling out the crowd. Much like the response I got, there were the collectors waiting to bid on Ebay… some guy came along expounding, “It’s a hammer! Beat it!!”
It’s supposed to be 5-6’ with offshores this weekend…
I am so stoked for you!!! YEEEW!
Yeah, like this silver dollar on E-Bay… I guess it’s just a coin. I suppose he should spend it? As currency, it’s worth a dollar.

hehe! thats another way of looking of it but what about this, Because i’m a grom I keep outgroing my wetsuits, now do i hang up my small wetties and remember the good times i had wearing it or do I trade it in and let someone else enjoy the fun, my wetsuit doesn’t want to be hanging up in a closet it wants to be out in the water surfing, its the same with surfboards.
haha…if you found out one of your wetsuits was worth $1500 because jack O’neill personally stitched it would you just keep on using it 'cause it was meant to used? on the board, I’d probably split the difference, paddle out the lightning bolt once on a really good day (but also bring the board i’d normally use), try to glean some knowledge of how it works, and how the progression left that shape behind. Then polish it up, sell it, and hopefullto someone who would keep it alive for others to see.
Thats a classic board you have there my friend. It has a special place in surf/design history. Do the right thing. Dont ride it. Build a new one.
Its the personality of the individual, if you are into collecting items that have a “significant” value then you might consider hanging it on the wall or selling it to someone who would appreciate it that way. If you dont believe in collecting anything but memories, then go ahead and ride the hell out of it and enjoy every minute of it. I personally dont collect but dust where I am not looking so any board I have its gonna be ridden till its dead. Take lots of pictures and try to take care of the board in the process so it last a long time but at the end what counts more is how you enjoyed the board … looking it while it hangs on the wall doesnt seem like your way of enjoying so wax it up and go rip. Peace
Ride it…
It’s a tangible object, designed to be surfed, not designed to be a wall hanger…
Speaking as someone who has heard all too often, that what I ride, others would be afraid to even wax up…
That’s frustrating…
In like it seems that monetary value of such objests is of paramount concern over “the essence of the experience”…
Let’s say you never ride the board and just sell it…
Sure your pocket will be fuller (for a while), but the greater value is not yours…
The greater value is the feeling you get when you wax it up, stride confidently to the ocean, paddle out with pride, and connect to the soul of the board…
That to me is priceless and those oppertunities should never be passed up…
The choice is yours…
I know what I’d do…

Wow Colin- Congrats, that is a very nice board. I had a yardsale Lopez ($5) that I sold for big money- I still regret it and wish I still had it. I suggest making it your Lopez your “state occassion” board. Ten years ago my wife bought me a 9’6"Weber Stock Model (1964)from a fella in the water- exactly like the one we had as kids, competition stripe and everything. The board is very clean trims nice. I ride it on Father’s Day, Christmas and take it to memorial paddleouts. I’ve turned down big piles of money for it. Ride your Lopez special days, hang it up with wax on it, be happy, be nice, marry a kind woman, start saving money as a young man, read every night and don’t forget to floss. On “retro love”, I like “retro” boards but I don’t surf them just to be retro. I have many “retro” and different boards that I have collected over the years and I surf them all. I don’t think about the age of the board when I’m deciding what to choose, I’m thinking about the conditions and which board would work best and which board I feel like riding. Boards arn’t retro to me they are just surfboards. Yeah it’s fun to be different and ride something other than the 9" egg longboard and the 6"1 thruster chip, but that’s about the extent of it.
I say you should ride it.
Does a board need validation by being ridden? “Hasn’t seen water in years.” Ten? Twenty? Shelved to cure forever? Old wine that’s never breathed once poured from barrel to bottle, mystery in a cold cellar, sun is the enemy, until freed by allied armies or a time machine? Why existence?
