Lords of Dogtown Special Screening

I got some extra free tickets to a 7 pm screening tommorrow evening in La Jolla. I understand that it is probably just another Hollywood joke movie. However, a couple minutes of pool skating and seventies style surfing will hopefully redeem the entire movie. If any of you guys out there want a ticket or two let me know. Darren

If there’s any lightsabers in there I’ll bring my two year old,

if not I’m out ;>

Ask Tenover he might be up for it…

i find it interesting that the lead actors have no surf or skate experience…

sohaole, you and tenover where the ones i had in mind. Just let me know. We are gonna skate and party it up in the parking lot before hand. who knows, maybe we could make it fun. darren

ILL TAKE A TICKET!!! (619) 519-3131 man yeah!

Sony pictures asked Dale Solomonson to make a few custom Neumatic surfmats for the Dogtown movie. I don’t know if any mat-surfing footage made the final cut but according to Dale, the movie’s stuntmen really got a kick out of the surfmats!

so, Darren …

what was the movie like…any good surfing / skating ?

… or, was it just the usual over the top hollywood ‘point break’ and ‘fast times at ridgemont high’ type shiiite ?

My friends and I caravaned over to the movie in a cargo van two hours early. We then skated the la jolla shopping center back parking lot much to securities chagrin. By the time the movie started we were ready to rock and roll with pocket fulls of tecate and cheap wine( the refreshments could have biased our judgment). The sound track was rocking. The skating was great. There was minimal surfing. There were not any good waves. There were shots of many great looking boards. We got rowdy and hooted throughout the entire movie just like how my dad taught me. Ever since I saw endless summer II with him in the theater he has been educating me on proper surf movie etiquete via the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. We were the only rowdy stoked viewers in the sold out theater. All the other kids just sat quietly like it was a normal movie. All in all we had a great time and left pretty stoked. We then skated the lots barefoot for another 2 hours. We had a good time. Darren

was the skating original 1970s dogtown stuff, or did they go to different places with replicas of the old boards ?

any of the z-boys in the movie ? [or, was it all ‘actors’ ?]

cheers !

ben

…what is “tecate” ??

Tecate = Mexican Beer

Thanks for the offer darren, unfortunately I was a day (or three) late and a dollar short! Glad you guys had a good time, and I definitley want to see the flick, even if I have to pay for it…

This is a hollywood film, that recreates the story of the Z-boys. A few years back, original Z-boy Stacey Peralta made a documentary with real footage and interviews with the real guys. Then he wrote a screenplay for this hollywood film. All of the equipment and locations were carefully recreated to look correct (i know some of the skaters who were consultants on the film) but the characters are portraid by actors, there are stunt men (stunt skaters), etc. But there are a few scenes in which Peralta and Alva had to do their own skating on film because the stunt guys weren’t getting it quite right.

I´m pretty excited to see the movie, because I think it could be the first GOOD Hollywood Movie about a part of skateboarding history! I love the stuff Stacy Peralta does since the first Bones Brigade Videos to this day and Riding Giants, which is a masterpiece in my opinion!

And since Tony Alva and Stacy were on set non-stop, to make sure it´s gonna be as real as possible and other original Z-Boys involved with the project, my expectations are really high!

My Problem: I don´t have a clue when it´s gonna start here in Germany! F#%K!

Here you go:

The crazy thing is no Japan release.

Ben,

A few of the guys made it into the movie as ‘extras’ in a very look quick or you’ll miss 'em scenario- Jim Muir as a cop, Craig Stecyk in the background of a skate contest and Jay Adams is in a party scene being given a beer by the Jay Adams character which is a little strange, but not as strange as the way they redid a lot of Stecyk’s orginal photos with the actors posing EXACTLY like the originals! Anyone in the LA area should head to the Otis School of Art this Sat night as there’s a low rider bike show that Stecyk has a bike or two in and it should be sort of fun. With all these movie premieres and art shows we’re a pretty cultural bunch huh?

thanks for the info guys !!

…I’ve marked August 18th in my diary.

Hopefully the skating surpasses the “acting” and “plot” …

we shall see .

ben

yeah , what’s with the “Czech republic” and “Lithuania” [!!!] getting a screening and , yet, Japan misses out ??? that sucks , big time !!

Sounds like you had a ball!!! I’ve just bee out skating the 6 wheeler. stacks of fun.

aahh winter in Sydney gotta love it! early sunrise, big swells (2 8ft+ in the last month alone i might add.) skating at night, less people, no wantobees… awesome.

one thing they never showed in “dogtown/z-boys” was the crew skating pipes [eg: Biniak at Mt. Baldy , or at ‘Upland’] …

is there any of that in THIS movie , by any chance ?

cheers !

ben

p.s. - Josh …“winter” = LATER sunrise , and earlier sunset , by the way…

Summer we have daylight saving though so everything now is an hour earlier hence sunrise earlier.

Cool! Thank you very much for the info!

Damn, that´s still a long time ahead! Hmm, but I guess it ain’t no Star Wars aka Megacomercial I´mgonnagetevery ratsassintheworld to see it and make multimillionmegabucks with too much CGI and shitty dialogues, movie!

Oh, did this turn into a Star Wars thing? Excuse me! I still love it! That´s the funny part!

P.S. I hope I get my new shaping stall soon, so I can get back to making surfboards and Swaylocks main purpose!
