Losing another one

Just found out today that Randy Sleigh who has been shaping for over 40 years on Kauai,Oahu and in San Clemente and other places has liver cancer and they can't do anything for him so we will lose him before to long and I have informed a mutual friend to keep me upto date on his health and how he is doing. I had his phone # but can't find it now so I am having a friend send it to me so I can call him since he is a great friend and one of our old surfing buds who used to surf with us all the time back in the early 70's. I cannot believe how many people are dying from cancer on Kauai these days. Aloha,Kokua

that’s too bad kokua

when i bought my first custom from Freddie P Sr. when he had his “Hawaiian Surf” store in the haleiwa marketplace back in the 90’s i got a 6’8"x19.5"x3" big boy thruster that was shaped by Randy.

It was a good board and I still have it although Sharkcountry busted it up and fixed it later.

he was pretty big back then just before Pyzel started coming into the scene.

wish him no pain…

Auwe!

I wasn't a close friend by any means but I remember Randy from years ago here in town. One of the good guys.

I bought a keiki ‘R. Sleigh’ with the tiki guy logo from the Haleiwa shop and gave it to a young female grom who loved it, one great thing is the smile he put in other lives, thanks and give best regards.

There is a little bit more to the story of that board. It was like a keiki tanker, thin and light. It felt like a ripper though when you’d pick it up. It traveled to Japan with me once and was leaning up against a wall with an impressive assortment of boards when a buddy from Tokyo visited during a typhoon. He didn’t feel comfortable on his longboard after he saw the only surfable place which was a barreling right rivermouth on baseball sized rocks. We drove back to my place, I told him to take his pick. He passed up the mcd pipe gun and I was silently shocked, he picked up Randy’s board, moved it back and forth feeling the rails, he grinned. I’ll take this one, he says.

Aloha Bernie, That is so cool that you had one of Randy's boards and the same for the other 2 guys. I think I saw Randy about 3 days before I moved and he had that grin of his and said he was goin to Oahu to shape some boards, that was something he did every few months. He told me where he would shape over there but I can't remember now. He was doing more Electrical work on Kauai than shaping since he was also a good electrician and we could talk about building boards or electrical work and it was always nice when he stopped by the house. I really feel sorry for his wife since she is a wonderful lady and just loves Randy so much and she used to come with him sometimes when he came to the house. Take care my friend and I am going to get together with your brother next month when he brings his daughter over for college. Aloha,Kokua
