Losing weight and how it affects the ride

Since Xmas - when my weight got to a scary 228 lbs, I’ve been really strict with myself and eating loads less - weight now down to 210 lbs.

Lots of interesting effects on my surfing:

Pro’s

1 - Now only need two laxadaisical paddles to catch waves

2 - Board goes so much faster -

3 - Am nearly pulling airs!!! (- ie going into the air with board under feet but losing confidence and just kicking out — one day I’ll not worry so much)

4 - my bamboo board that I previously hated now seems pretty good (altho still too heavy).

Cons

1 - I’m finding my standard board difficult to control -

2 - My hard edged all the way up 6 9, now seems to catch edges in I’m not very careful on the bottom turn - any one explain this?

3 - My wetsuit’s now too big and I’ve gotta fork out some more cash to keep warm.

Overall — pro’s seem to outweight cons

PS my nob’s grown too!

Hey Silverback,

Go down to the grocery store and pick up 18 x 1lb tubs of butter, see how that feels. That’s how much you were paddling around before you lost it.

Good new on the nob front too, it was probably too scared to come out and play, the extra room in your wetsuit will come in handy now big boy…

Hi Silverback,

Good on you for lossing the weight - I’ll have a crack at con 2

This isn’t based on personal experience, just a theory - but if you’ve gotten lighter and haven’t changed your stance then the pitch of your board will change. You’ll be slightly more nose down, so the point where the rail enters the water will have shifted forward slightly. If you’ve got a fair bit of nose rocker this might be causing the change in the way the board feels. You could try putting in a bigger back fin - that’ll pull the nose up again - but will have other effects. PM Lee DD he’s really good on this stuff.

Intelligent suggestion…yep the board’s got a fair amount of nose rocker and a smallish back fin!.. Could be … I’ll change the fins today and report back… cheers

Standard board difficult to control - You probably just can’t bury the rail like you could before. The overall volume and rail volume in particular were probably well suited to your former weight but now have a bit too much float (I’m assuming your standard is a shorty).

Those with a little patience, needle, thread and neoprene glue can cut down their wet suits. Done that before.

I tried your suggestion - result - No catching!!

Brilliant…don’t have to shape another board quite yet…

That’s cool,

That pitch/fins thing I picked up from Greg Loehr’s theory of pitch article check: http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/detail_page.cgi?ID=546
