Low Surfboard Prices

Mr. Mc Ding…Whatever, Mitch’s sells FCS plugs for $3.75 each. So 6 plugs x $3.75 is $22.50 for the set. But if you can get them at $10.00 I will gladly give you $15.00 for the set, and you can pocket the $5.00 bucks.

Keep me posted on the deal?

Howzit resinhead, If you know any pro glassers who buy from FCS they might sell you a production set which includes plugs, fins, key, foam dams, and have them throw in some milled fibers. I pay $24.34 for them and sell them for $26.00 which covers my shipping from Oahu also. If you lived here I would do the same for you. Also FCS is going to sell their fiberglass production fin sets for $32.00 a set. A shaper friend who uses Futures said they want $50.00 for a set up with fiberglass fins and he's going to start buying FCS set ups from me. But the cheapest way to go is glass ons at about $13.00 set. Aloha, Kokua

Hey Resinhead--------- I think you misunderstood. Your whole cost analysis was right-on! Your figures are typically within pennies of what I would pay at Fbrgls Hi. Maui or SB. I thought you said though that those costs didn’t include fins which would cost you another $10. I just have never seen FCS fins in a set of three for a thruster that cheap. Did I misread you? My referance to “other comments” referred to posts before yours. Should of made myself clearer. Your numbers are right-on. I agree with the guy who said that if a guys’ labor has no consideration as a cost, then howabout doin’ a few for me.McDing

Ya at Bashams a set fcs fins plugs and dams are 28 or you can add 15 for carbon or add 25 for the new fiberglass fins which are really light.

Hey!----- Just came back from FoamEZ site. FCS GAM thruster set 3 fins 6 plugs 1 key $54.50. I think I usually do better than that @Fbrgls.Hi. in SB, but it’s been awhile because I’ve been using O’Fishl. McDing

Howzit spazman, Should be $32.00 for a set of fiberglass fins, plugs, etc, the whole deal. Aloha, Kokua

Mc Ding no worries, I think we were both on the same page. It just bums me when someone is selling a new surfboard for $250.00. When they sell that cheap, no one is eating very well, and it cheapens the art.

-Jay

Resinhead------- We are definatly on the same page. It completly bums me out to see guys who are actually in this business(ie; tax ID #, business license, shop etc.) cheapen the whole trip by giving away boards. You hope that even the backyard guys wise-up at some point. But many do not. It’s just a simple fact that no matter what you are paying for materials(glass, fins, boxes, plugs etc.) it is all part of cost. If a guy is any kind of craftsman at all he must get a fair dollar for the time/labor involved. Not to mention sales tax and overhead. Overhead is where the backyard guy can save a buck. For the hobbiest time is irrelevant, but for a shaper or glasser time is definatly money. With a profession as dirty, dusty and toxic as ours you obviosly can’t be in it for money alone. Most guys enjoy doing their part of the process and seeing a quality product come out the end. Our whole surfing and boardbuilding subculture is a mindblower that few creatures on this earth can ever taste any thing like. The people and characters I have met over the years make it worth any dues I have paid. You just flat have to love it. In other words there is a lot of personal satisfaction that goes with the lifestyle. On the money end of it a guy should really be working at trying to get his board price up, not down. Then you can afford to actually and literally give one away to some poor grom once in awhile. McDing

Ah yes but its tough when everyone is trying to undercut each other. Add to that you can go to Costco and get a board for $220. How the hell do you stay in buisness? Much easier when you are already established but when your at the bottom it sucks the big one.

That’s what I’m talking about. When was the last time you saw a full time shaper pull up in a brand new $40K Ford F-350 crew cab diesel? That’s right, your in it for the love.

I have a buddy that was glassing in San Diego for years, making pretty good money. 15 years ago moved up to the Columbia River to get involved in glassing wind surfers, makes a lot more $$ for the same processes. Surfing is the only water sports industry that under sells it’s gear.

-Jay

That’s Right! McDing

For the new fins. The figure 8 ones. Becuase if you buy them seprate they are really expensive

Howzit spazman, I talked to my FCS rep. just last wed. and $32. was the price he quoted me for the figure 8 fiberglass fins with plugs, etc, etc. That’s the price for wholesale accounts. It amazes me how much retailers mark up some products, that’s why I sell extra sets of fins at a reduced price only to people who have me glass their boards. Since I’m good friends with the owners of the 2 surfshops in Hanalei and don’t want them to complain to FCS I informed them about only selling to my customers. Having a wholesale account with FCS also lets me buy bags, leashes, everything at wholesale. Aloha, Kokua

Woudl you liek to sell me a set of them pugs and all for 40$ plus shipping. I am in california.

thanks

Spazman check your e-mail, I sent you a message. Aloha, Kokua

FCS has factory in China now , cheap labour but still selling at premium price in u.s

Quote:

im in N.C. north carolina…thats in america … like i said earlier ,if you know how i can make my board for $100 dollars let me know…

The WRV factory in KDH just sold me five blanks (up to 7’3") for $58 apiece. (252) 491-8535. Total cost of materials for one board will be roughly $150.

hi there mike, did you get those fin solutions plugs i sent home with lance ebert yet?

Howzit dave, no, but Lance will probably give them to Jeff Lopez to give to me. I’m looking forward to checking them out since I’m always interested in new products. Aloha, Kokua

What is a fair price to pay for a shaper or glasser, by the hour.

I think a low-skilled labor position should pay near ten bucks an hour, and I’m talking about the guy who is cleaning the shop, putting out buckets, changing paper on the floor, whatever.

But someone who can shape on command any board, or who can glass without screwing it up has years of experience and therefore, deserves at least twice that.

But even twenty dollars an hour, at forty hours per week, is only forty grand per year, and if they chap has to pay for his own health care, he is barely getting by.

So, I think thirty to thirty-five an hour is fair. My opinion, of course.
