Gdaddy, I just got the Whisper 100 and followed the directions. I am using it for small repairs. Thanks so much for the tip. Brilliant.
all the best
Bored. No waves either coast. All my board building gear is in storage since my wife and I downsized. No idea when I will find a shop to rent. So, I decided to repair my Asymm Fish. I dropped it on the concrete garage floor of our small town house. Cracked the nose pretty good.
Here it is pre ding:
I got the little aquarium pump out and started scrounging for repair stuff.
Tape - auto parts store
plastic sack - kitchen
Breather - paper towel
nozzle - none, no mustard bottle so I wrapped the end in some porus anti-skid for rugs
gloves - Home Depot
coffee - kitchen
peel ply - that packing plastic on a roll with pin holes
scale for weighing epoxy - kitchen
Felt like a scavenger hunt. And boy, that little pump can suck.
I know this is over kill and I could have used the tape dam method and been fine, but I would have been done in 10 minutes and where is the fun in that.
Well, that was fun. Should be done by the time I get through typing this.

What's in the coffee cup?
Aha, another good use for the cheap pump!!. I have one now, still need to do a dry run on a veneer, but ding repair looks like good practice. Do you put the suction end of the hose on the opposite side of the ding ??.
Any Aussies out there wanna share where they get veneers??
I plan to try clear packing tape:

maybe?
Ok, so few quick questions.
2.) how do you get a really clean line with .6mm veneer ?. When cutting, it can tear quit easily. Shears?, Stanley knife ?. Bit late now though haha, but next time…
Oh, and I’ll change the tape to clear also
These little pumps don’t have the capacity to outrun a leak so you need a good seal. For complete boards I use the 36" diameter seamless bags that only require sealing at each end, and I use the 2-piece bag clamps to get the good seal.
If I was using flat sheet and taping 3 sides I’d be real nervous about trying to get the good seal with anything less than the mastic tape you see the composite guys use in the videos. Your mileage may vary.
Absolutely exactly what happened mate. The dry run was fine, but when I pulled the double sided tape and tried to fold the bag over ( with a wetted veneer and glass! ), it got a few kinks. I taped up most with some duct tape ( thankfully I have a good supply ), but it was very slow. I then realised I had an old vac down in the shed, so grabbed it and hooked it up. All good from then, and left it for around 90 mins, with a heater on ( its cold here ). It’s not perfectly aligned, and a few dry spots and zits that will need sanding, but overall a success. Love to post a pic but having big troubles. The vacuum worked really well, and it didn’t get hot after 90 mins. I’ll use it again for sure.
Next time try 1-1/2" masking tape - the cheap stuff. Strangely enough the duct tape I tried my first time vacuum bagging was not even close to airtight.
Masking tape has not let me down for the past 10 years or so.

Beerfan did you unstick the bag all the way around or just the end and slideing the board in?
Cheap masking tape from the dollar store works well.
I’m dying to know if you’re using a converted aquarium pump; and if so, how well it worked for you.
Not sure if you mean me but not for that board started to but had leak so went to the fridge pump. As you say the aquarium pump won’t keep up with a leak. I’ve used it for little things and sticking down cork on a deck. Worked great for that its only a little baby one think it was five bucks.
Gdaddy, I set it up, but ended up using my old shop vac, which worked quite well. I really think if I can get a better way to seal the bag, it’ll work we’ll. I like the idea o sealing 3 sides then slipping the board in the end.
For my limited attempts at vacuum bagging I bought some of the wide tubing, sealed one end with the buytl rubber double-stick tape and left a couple of feet of extra length on the bag. Each time I use it, a strip of the sealant tape was placed across the open end and then cut open when the pull was completed. I end up just throwing out the used tape and 1" or so of the bag. The tape is only 1/2" wide so I can do several pulls from a single bag and just use a fresh piece of tape at the open end each time. It gets shorter each time but...
