Saw Bill while he was here on Oahu. Talked a while, but certainly didn’t have nearly enough time.
never enough time.
Are there any interviews (preferably video) of Bill? I searched YouTube but only found Steve Thrailkill testing out the Wavegarden, any relation?
With the last name, Thrailkill, there is likely to be a relationship, if you dig deep enough. That said, I’m not aware of any. I am aware that Steve does some surf photography. I’d be interested in meeting him, and comparing family history’s. You never know, we may be some form of distant cousins.
Herb, maybe you can talk Mr. Thraillkill to put into writing his vast store of knowledge in building surfcraft. It would be a loss to let that treasure get away. I’m sure there are a lot of anecdotes and great stories from such a life. I certainly would buy that book and a few others for friends. He has been an inspiration to me surely and many other shaper/surfers. He has more experience than anyone I know. Just a story or two on the evolution he has witnessed would be a treat. He’s a ready made article in the Journal at a minimum. Someone, please call Pezman!!
tblank, I’ve learned that if you’re polite and respectful, Bill T. loves to talk story and is very generous with his knowledge and more. If you get the chance to see and feel one of his boards I think you’ll be amazed. Perfection comes to mind. Mike
I’ll second that rooster.
I owe a tremendous amount to Bill.
Beyond gracious with both his time and knowledge.
Hi Roostah Mike, I agree and have been of benefit of Mr. T.'s helpful manner. “Talked” to him a couple of times and he was generous enough to send me a fin template and photos of his North Shore board…quite a treat. With all that he knows and learned over his tenure, it would be a trove to those of us with lesser experience. As I said, even a few of his stories from a lifetime of building and surf would make a great read. If I were up to the task, I’d compile stories from a lot of the masters and have a best seller with them.
I sometimes wonder why Surfer’s Journal hasn’t done an article on him. He’d be perfect.
Amazing photo Herb. Mike
A book would be better. I think there’s way too much for a magazine article. The crazy stories of his big wave days, the boards, it would be a good read. Same for most of the guys who’ve been around since the days of wood boards. They are disappearing now and their stories are treasures.
I agree, Sharkcountry. Way better. Mike
Journal needs to do article on both of those old geezers. Herb and Bill. Bill should be rich from fin design and Herb from the famous diaper fill resin thickener.
You can wear down that stiff ass new sanding screen by putting it in the dryer with some tennis shoes. Keep the temp on cool.
Throw Deadshaper in there and I’d buy it.

Journal pays peanuts. Like to see an article on Ambrose…Could piece it together with the hundreds (thousands?) of archived Ambrose poets.
