Does anyone know if they’ve used balsa (or any other wood) on the shaping machines?..(For polyurethane only?!). Just curious…Thanks,… tom.
Yes, I have seen a few balsa, ceder boards done on a machine. I think they were done at Pro-cam. http://wegenersurfboards.com

I think that as long as the milling machine was good and solid you could cut the shape out of anything as long as you adjusted your cutter material, cutter speed, and feed rate accordingly. All the CAM package really does is generate and control the actual tool path. Imagine cutting a surfboard out of freshwater ice that you could surf in salt water which was around 30F. It wouldn’t even melt - perhaps just slowly dissolve due to the higher salt concentration in the ocean water. holy cow what the hell am i talking about?

We’ve also done solid redwood, chambered redwood, balsa/redwood mixtures, etc etc. It’s just a matter of picking a sharp tool and using the correct spindle speed and feedrate. http://www.kklmachine.com
