Magazine (Paging Swaylocks Crew)

What do you guys think of a Swaylocks magazine? Dedicated to surfing and shaping? Maybe some pro shapers could writefor it? It could also Feature a board of the month (with dimensions and a how to, so you can shape your own…etc… Just an idea I thought of right now, just wondering what you guys think of it.

Greg Webber was thinking of a shaping/surfboard mag. Wonder what came of that?

i like the idea, maybe i can finaly use my college degree if something like this happens. i am sure my parents would be happy.

I think it will be a surfboard magazine, not an army magazine ?? [ ‘nookular surfboards’, anyone ?]

Make it either: A) a magazine like “Woodenboat”. Each issue has several professional-level discussions of designs, materials, supplies, techniques, history, readers projects, etc., etc. B) a coffee table book

GEE!!!

(SARCASTIC)

Can we make it like 99.999% of the surf magazines, with a 50:1 advertisement to article ratio!?!?!?!

I sure would love to see that…with tons of product placement for yuppie surf crap / wear that is as disposable as the modern potato chip thruster!!!

(seriously) why not approach Surfers Journal and see if they are willing to do an 'EXTRA" issue on shaping including “Alternative materials” and backyard / garage shaping…

It would also be a great fundraiser for here to compile all the archives, main topics or ultra repetative newbie questions into a softback mega novel…

would there be collaboration with the other shapers forums???

just a rant…

With apologies to Joyce Kilmer.

"I think that I shall never see

A ‘magazine’ lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

‘Magazines’ are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree." – Joyce Kilmer

Just what the world needs. Another magazine.

i realize that it will be about surfing chip. i am a news media communication major.(ie newspaper, magazine and so on and so forth.)

i really like the idea of a book with the most frequently asked question. it would be a great fundraiser for the site.

I was involved in a sorta similar project, some time ago. Let’s be kind and say it didn’t work out too well. Surf magazines are an obsolete concept that don’t know they are dead yet.

Due to the generosity of Mike Paler, we have something here that is way, WAY ahead of the magazines, without the shlock, the pandering and ( god help us all ) the moronic pro surf world in general.

The professional shapers that are kind enough to give us some of their hard-won knowledge, along with the pro glassers, sanders, pinline guys, you name it, they are not just blithering away in articles, they are answering questions and adding to their answers with near-infinite patience. The very sharp amateurs are writing about their successes and their failures in ways that are useful to the guy who doesn’t have a full-on factory setup and instead is making stuff on a limited budget in his garage or cellar. And then ya got the people like Paul Jensen or the vaccum bagging people or the epoxy experimenters, who are not in the 'duude, dig my thruster, it’s just like Kelly’s ’ world, they are going in very different directions with very different shapes and methods of construction that you can’t sell to the average duude on the street cos it isn’t ‘just like Kelly’s’ .

Ya don’t get that in a magazine. Dumbing this down enough to make a successful magazine out of it would kinda blow away what it’s all about, y’know?

hope that’s of use

doc…

Swaylock’s takes up the little extra time I have so I’m not interested in another mag. However, I would love to see the board of the month happen right here on Swaylock’s. I think it would be outrageously successful in that one could follow the progression of the board, kinda like Bert did with his sandwich construction technique, and then ask questions about htings that are unclear. There could be lotsa pics and maybe some video for the really complicated stuff. There could also be a materials list with templates and such. Oh pleeeeeeeeeease, let’s do it. Are there any veteran shapers/glassers/artists who would be willing to be involved in something like that? I’ll video and photo the first here in so’cal. What say you??

i love it. i think that it would be the best thing that we could add to the site. we wouldnt even really have to start a new catagory it could just be a monthly thread with lots of pics and all that good stuff. i would volunter for something like this when my next project begins

I’m holding out for the Swaylock’s Comic Book.

(I will buy 100 copies of issue #1, then save them for my great-great-granchildren.)

the magazine would have no ads, would be somewhat like surfer journal, would be made up of pictures, articles about shaping from around the world, would have interesting threads from archives, etc…, maybe some how to’s on tricks, a how to on a featured board, more pictures, and maybe more stuff, duno… feeling a bunch of negative towards this, seems like a good idea, wont be a sell out to ads.
