Making Box-ready fins

I’ve been trying to figure out what most fin companies use for the pivot peg on center fins. You know the small peg that goes through on the opposite side of the base from the tab? Anyways, I have a few fins that I’ve made but I dont know what to do as far as putting one of those pegs in there, any advice?

Hey Stonian,

You can buy them ready made where I am but I’ve seen from previous threads that you can use brass rod the same thickness cut to length.

A good idea on setting the pin position is to use an old fin box and drill a hole in the side all the way through where the pin would normally locate itself.

The you put the fin into the box and drill through the pilot hole, perfect position every time…

Use a cement drill bit and not a standard…the cement drill bits will center better in fiberglass.

Howzit Stonian, You can buy the stainless steel roll pins from Bahne/fins unlimited for about 20 cents a piece. I bought 50 of them a few years back when I was making fins for friends. Check the resources for their phone number and call them, they are easy to work with.Aloha,Kokua

Stonian,

A #8 x 32 machine screw cut to desired length will do the trick in a pinch (32 is the thread size). Any hardware store should have then in stainless or brass.

There’s a thread about this same topic in the archives from a couple of years ago if you can find it.

Pete

Most hardward stores have them in the section of all the little slide-out boxes of metal bits. They’re called ‘split roll pins’. You can usually find stainless steel in the right size. They cost pennies.

Will give that a go do you meet a masonary bit fot brick walls or a special bit just for cement?

The best thing I’ve found for cutting Glass fiber is tunckston Carbide, looks like grit.

I’ve manager to pick up a wide range of cutting blades for different tools, but havent found a drill bit yet. I’ve got a drill bit used to drill holes in mirrors but I think it will be to wide at 6mm.

Anyone know where I could get TC drill bit.

…1. measure the inside box rail

…2. take a stainless steel screw the same width

…3. cut the screw head

…4 do a hole in the tab sligtly (minimum) thinner

…5. screw in the “rod” with a monkey wrench

…6. voila, you ve got the pin screwed and you dont need resin

That’s the one, verbal failure on my part…
