.... making multi pigmented fin panels ....

I’m about to lay up a multi-coloured pigmented fin panel , for my brother.

He will foil it.

Has anybody got photos of THEIR multi-coloured pigmented [box ] single fins , please ?

Any people here , who have made them in the past … can you share about how YOU  did them , please ?

( I have done a few SIDE fins in the past , this will be my first one to be double foiled )

I have a few different ideas , and would be keen to see yours / hear your experiences , making them .

  cheers , guys !

  Ben

there’s and internl panel or graphics they build the fins around

Austin showed how to do it once here.

Those are certainly nice but unfortunately they are not quite what I had in mind.

I guess it  'could ’ be an interesting concept , and one I haven’t attempted yet , to do a fabric inlay with different colours , complete with ‘foil line patterns’…

But  for what Simon wants ,  it needs to be 50 layers or more of 6oz ,  in different alternating coloured pigment ,  for the multi-pigmented fin panel …

  cheers !

heres a pretty good video on laying up fin panels.

i havent done it yet, but i definetly will soon…he goes through mistakes that hes made and what he would do differently.

i would use UV resin personally, to make the process go much faster and to waste less resin…love that stuff.

looking forward to some pictures…ill wait to see what kind of mistakes you make so i can avoid those as well! hahaha have fun man enjoy

utter rubish?

ben pm me i will walk you through it.

cheers huie

Eh,

If huie falls short of which I doubt.

call me

Ben, I’ve done a bunch.

My friend Joey Baldwin taught me a few tricks.

Between each color layer, Hot Coat.

As soon as it kicks, lay up next color.

This gives the color change a sharp crisp transition.

Don’t wait too long before applying next color or it wont stick.

We did some really cool multi-colored fins @ Brewer.

Some of my favs were Yellow, Red and Black.

Possibilities are endless.

Have fun!

Barry,

Are you sanding the Hotcoat before you add the next color? You explained it well but I am making sure.

Dave

No.

After the Hot Coat begins to dry,

while still semi-sticky,

lay up next color.

Easy peasy.

Right on!

Thanks Barry

Thanks for posting that up publicly, Barry.

thanks Huie !  pm sent

thanks Barry ! … one guy locally told me he used to sand the hotcoat between colours . Two others here on sways have told me NOT to.

It’s been so long since I did my last ones  [and I didn’t record what I did then , for some strange reason ??] , that I have forgotten what I did , at the time .

Anyway …

… so , before I throw myself over the ledge on the 8 x 10 " single  box fin panel … some time in the coming week , I intend to lay up a 6 " x 8 "  'practice panel ’ [ it will probably be 36 layers , for a pair of FCS tabbed single-foiled side fins ]

 colours …

6 layers clear

8  red

8 white

8 yellow

6 layers clear

[the reason for the " 6 layers clear " ,  being … so I don’t foil too much of the outside red layer , if I leave them a fairly thick foil  ]

cheers for your replies , everyone !

[ taken from this old  "fin photos " thread  … here     ]

… THIS was the last one I did , when living in perth , for colin earle , the local surf supplies guy there .

It was made for a pair of twinnys , to replace the original [  snapped ] ones in a ? c. 1979 ? board of his . He saw a grommet with the board at the beach one day , and offered to swap the twinny , for a new custom order for the grom  =  one STOKED grom , and one stoked 48 year old [colin] grom , too ! ] …

Gday Ben, I was checking those out at Colin’s the other day. On a black sprayed twin fin pin, right?

Nice work, mate!

Would love to take that for a spin

… cheers mate , indeed it is !

Is there any chance , when next you’re at Col’s again , that  you could take a photo of that board , and fins , please , mate ?

[ maybe even  with Colin holding it , too ?]

  Just for you ,

[  and any others that ‘may’ be interested ? ]

  …here is yesterday’s work …

  [ I  thought I better make / do  a  'practice ’ [smaller] panel , before going the whole hog … ]

6 " x 8 "

2 colours , this time … red and white …

38 layers …

Good stuff Ben.

Did you give it a quick Hot Coat btween layers for a clean color separation?

That is the trick for no fuzzy change from one color to the next.

Cheers.

[ the asterisked  'clear ’ layers are , firstly , a hotcoat , then 1 layer of cloth lammed , then colour . Whereas ,  the two outside 'clears ’ are , in fact , 5 layers , each ,  of clear laminated cloth . I hope that makes sense ? ]
