I have seen a lot of people saying they make ther power pads for like 5 to 10 dollars but i can’t find anything in the archives on making them. Likw what materials i need and so on. So if someone knows the link to it or how to make them that would be great.
For glue on sanding discs - Generally just glue a round peice of foam to a sanding backing pad. Then glue a vinyl type material to other side (side you’d be attaching the sandpaper to) of the foam.
I use a velcro backed system and it covers all my sanding and polishing needs. Makes for a very versatile system - going from different foam densities, sanding grits, to polishing pads without ever needing to remove the backing pad from my sander/polisher. Hope this helps.
I used the foam from swimming kickboards that you can get at walmart, k mart and such places. They go for $3 or so and if you look carefully you can find it in different densities.
Harbor Freight sells 2" plastic arbors with a steel 5/8" threaded insert for sander/grinders. Bond these to 2-3" of high density foam with contact cement. Cut the foam a little oversize, try and get it concentric with the arbor. Put the pad in your sander, turn it on at the lowest speed, and take a coarse surform to the side of the foam until you get the size you want. Attach the paper with tacky glue. Some foam will get torn away changing paper, and you’ll eventually have to glue on another layer. You can try contact cementing a facing of denim or other heavy material to the foam, but this hasn’t worked for me. These pads won’t get the edge bite that a rubber powerpad will, nor will they produce a flat surface. They work well for me on already flat surfaces and rails, especially with the finer grits.
