Makita 1805B planer

I bought this brand new a few years ago and have never used it until this morning. What a foam cutter! Everything is gooD, 6 inch passes!, nice and clean then all of a sudden it starts to hop/chatter the foam (just a little toward the middle of the blank.)

I stop unplug it look at the bottom area thinking foreign matter may have stuck to the shoe or foot. Nothing. Make a couple more passes and all is well. Get to the middle of the board and a slight hop again. I realize I am new to this monster and a little intimidated so I am taking it easy and letting the weight of the tool do the job (as it should be with ant tool). Not to mention the dam thing is f-----ng heavier than any hand planer I have ever used…

I am curious if anyone else ever had this problem? I think it is probably just me getting use to something new.

Thanks

Casey McCrystal uses the same Planner to do big boards. He has it mastered. They work really well. Maybe you should try a different blank? Check the blades has well.

Double check the blades on each side of the barrel. Sounds like one side might be set higher than the other.

I had that problem with a spiral cutter on Rockwell 653. The blade was funky from the factory. One side was higher but there is no adjustment on that one. After a new cutter was installed it cut smooth.

What brand foam are you using? Some are almost impossible to shape with blades, I had to buy a “barrel” for Burford blanks.

Thanks guys! I checked the blades. They appear to be OK and alignment OK also. I went at it again and it only seems to act up when the blades make contact with the stringer. Using Rhino blanks. Maybe that’s it. Man I am excited today!!!
