Mark Richards 1970s twin fin...

Anyone had / still have one of the originals ?

from my mag collection, it appears [in America at least] they were offered with glassons , or the ‘star fin [box] systems’, also…

Hello Chipfish,

a good friend of mine, who's a really good surfer from South Africa now works as a WCT judge and he has a good relation with MR. Recently i was at his home and he showed me his fovorite surfboard: a modern MR twin fin that MR shaped himself not long ago. "Look at all my boards, they're on cheap board bags. Do you see this one with the $180 thick board bag? is the MR. She's my baby."

My friend is really stoked with this board, and he told me that you can't believe how fast the board is. He also told me that when he was at the Tavarua WCT he made some of the best tubes of his life on this twin fin...

He also told me that MR is still shaping the original twin fin exactly as they were back in the days, so maybe you can order one, or just find one to check.

Anyway, i preferred ST instead of MR judging from the Free Ride footage...

                     Coque.

Coque.

…Was that just because of THIS , though ??

I wonder if Mark STILL cringes over seeing that footage and the resulting photos ?

the difference was : - M.R. took that wave on, riding a twinfin [!], while Shaun was on a single…a nice contrast !

[M.R. rides singles and twinnies in free ride…that’s what made it really interesting for me !!]

Thanx Chipfish! You always post cool pics like these that are really hard to find. I have been searching the web for a copy of “Free ride” and some older threads mentioned something about a third edition with more Cheyne Horan footage. No luck so far in finding a copy, would be stoked just to get hold of the original. I am having some shoulder problems at the moment and it would be great to get something like “Free ride” to keep my spirits up.

Regards. Sami

WHERE do you live , ‘Sami’ ?

I can make some enquiries…if it gets released on dvd, then it will be universally watched

…I believe the video system in america is different to much of the rest of the world, so if you live there a copy of the video from here in Australia won’t work, apparently ? [I have the video of ‘free ride’.]

ben

I live in northern Europe, think we use the same video format as the states (VHS), not 100% sure though. But I found a copy on www.surfhistory.com, they also have the surfers journal biographies of Fitzgerald/Horan and Lynch/Carrol. Just have to wait for my next pay check, would be great to have them all on DVD.

Regards. Sami

Chipfish61,

I have a very old MR Twin. Beat up. Maybe beyond saving. I keep thinking one day I’ll restore it, but then I think it would be easier to copy it. Then I think I’ll move the fins and update the rails on the copy. Then I think it wouldn’t be the same. Then I think maybe I’ll just restore it. You get the picture.

If you want dimensions off this board, let me know.

Anyway, I have a new super twin shaped by the master himself. I treasure this board. What ride.

are you in Oz ?

…sounds like a job for “SUPER Platty” !!

Yes, dimensions would be nice, and a photo even , if possible please ?

…I’m always interested to see what (if any) sprays were done, as well as the outlines…

cheers !

ben

Here ya go Chipfish! -

Not an oldie, but the next best thing. A freshy! Surfed it once already and it feels great. Just need some good shaped point surf! Can’t wait!!

A pulled in nose and tail …and no spray ??

Jimmy, nice thruster outline ! [I’ve seen sh**loads of these kinds in the local shops here, some with back F.C.S. plugs [!!] …and , I have to say, I don’t like 'em, sorry.]

I guess I must be an ‘old schooler’ then, eh ?

ben

…as long as it goes well, and YOU like it though, I guess it was worth the wait for you ? [ I just hope at least the fins are the original templates ?!]

For anyone who MAY be interested, you can refer back to the original photo on the ‘M.R.’ thread at Surfer Design Forum for his original measurements.

Mr. Lokbox…

How’s the float on that baby?

You bringin her to the rock for BeachPark and RockyRights?

Any slide problems? Or is MR dialed after all these years.

What sized fins?

Would you go smaller in the next one? Think (but naturally don’t know) you weigh 180??

It’s an authentic MR twinnie. Same board MR rode back then. 6’2" x 20 1/4 x 2 5/8 Lost has brought back both the retro version (like mine) and the modern version which has the 2 fcs plugs in the back for a trailer fin. My friend got the modern one, and it’s insane also. Not sure which one/s you been seeing in the shops, but these both feel real nice!! No spray because it’s a no frills model for testing. Gonna ride it a few times then whack the fins off and put boxes in. Then i’ll give it back to Mayhem for him to ride. Might even try some different template twins in there(the original ones are glassed in it now).

NNNNNNNNnnoooooooooo !!!! Don't do it...PLEASE !!

That would border on sacrilege ! absolute bloody sacrilege !! (You're not SERIOUS , I hope ??!!

.... Or, did you buy two, Jimmy, so you can at least keep one "original" ???!!!

Sorry chip, but it’s how it’s got to be my friend. The glass-on fin on these things is 6 inches tall. Knowing that people will travel with them, Mayhem want’s to offer removables such as futures and Lokbox as an option. I was one of the first to receive one of these boards, and that’s the mission! Hopefully by next summer, mayhem will make me another, which I will take directly to pinliner for full authentic spray, and yes, she will have glass-ons.

And don’t worry man, when I retro this one, it’s just gonna get better. The fins that will go in it, will have way better foils than anything a surfboard sander could do to them. They’ll be adjustable too!

MR boards are super cool! I love the old ones and love the new ones… There a beutifal master piece compared to a thruster… MR… apparently isn’t very good anymore (this is acording to a certain nameless Newcastle local who resides on realsurf…) But I think he would still have an all time style! shame about his physical probs… Keep up the M.R shots I’ll contribute soon…

Josh.

Found on www.surfresearch.com.au

http://www.surfresearch.com.au/00000040.html And finally THE original…

Nice, but JJR’s was shaped in the last month!

6" side biters pretty much matches my twins with 6" tall x 5.75’s, and Locbox would just complement the whole package.

Here’s another one at ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=22710&item=7117338270&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

PS. Did they have futures boxes in the 70s?

regards,

Håvard

M.R. RIPS, still !

young uns may not like him because he doesn’t do airs and tailslides…[they probably won’t either, hopefully, when THEY are 48 years old !]

No, no ‘futures’ in '76…but bahne / fins unlimited, star systems and a few others…

here’s the man again…

always colourful !
