Marketing and Publicity are what the Industry is all About..

With the master of “green” Gary Young living on the big island quietly doing doing his unique thing for the past 20-30 years.

I was a little taken back by all this post in the paper this morning with no acknowledgement of who the “true pioneer” in this field really is…

shows you that the “industry” is all about just having a good publicist, fancy marketing and website than anything else… Oh yea play a little Jack Johnson in the background for effect… Just like the supermarket muzak

Gov. Linda Lingle recognized these winners of the Governor’s Innovation Awards: Innovation by Individuals: Master surfboard shapers Jeff Bushman and Kyle Bernhardt founded Country Feeling Surfboards, which is devoted to surfboards made with environmentally friendly materials;

Publicity doesn’t always turn into sales. Its still about hard work and good relationships with customers.

yea

but I guess the governor didn’t do any due diligence to know about this guy and what he’s been up to for the past 20-30 years before she decided to give out this award.

kind of a symbol about the noveau-liver pate’ness of this whole green bandwagon…

You have an interesting book.

Did you want the XPS billet? I wasn’t sure if you wanted one?

“Due diligence” used to mean something…then I saw the news last night about the a Hole that ripped everyone for billions that supposedly performed “due diligence” for all his clients. His sons ran the biz while he globetrotted to all his mansions and yacht.

I also noted your description of Bushman as “Master…blah blah”. I like JB and remember the first crude shapes he brought to me for glassing when he was still a carpenter in Ventura. He asked for tips and I supplied. Good guy really, has proven himself…took direction/tips quite well. Point I’m making is if he is a Mastershaper, then what does that make me and many others…? I see this “Master” label tossed about almost as liberally as “Legend”.

Let’s clarify this for a New York minute. Historically Master" comes from the days of indentured servants, apprentices, journeyman and so forth…it took a minimum of 25 years of dedicated work in a given craft/trade so…

…so basically I’m calling bullshit on a pile of surfboard craftsmen that make anywhere from fair to excellent surfboards with some degree of regularity…but the BSF (Bullshit Factor) that gets applied to how long and how many boards shaped is an absolute crock of you know what.

Like your thread here indicates…things get misconstrued with regularity. Some have these distortions unfairly placed upon them whle others are prone to their hungry ego directing them to ‘buy fame’ or do uscrupulous things.

“I was a free man in Paris…felt unfettered and alive…stoking the star maker machinery behind the popular song…”

ya gotta be in it to win it. maybe you should have nominated gary and the governor would have been able to consider other options. but then again that might be considered fancy marketing and you might be considered a good publicist.

i think its great to see someone making a major effort to green their boards, especially outside of the compsand arena. and its even greater to see environmental awareness in surfing recognised in the mainstream media.

publicity , marketing and websites are all important parts of any industry, why would the surfing industry be any different?

Yes and no…did the Gov do this current popular sound bite for JB and his buddy, or for her own self promo? Ya gotta be cautiously skeptical…er, scratch the cautiously part…you have to be skeptical in this day and age.

Who’s on first and nowdays all the rest of the bases end up stolen…

P.S.

I used to be sensitive, now I’m just macho.

not my book but a link for the newbies to the classic builders ref that’s still avaialbleon line…

sorry about the mis-communication

a definitley yes on the xps billet as long as it doesn’t put you out too much.

you know i’m one of the few remaining fans of blue, and cheap 1lb or less cores.

mahalo

as far Mr. GY, he’s so far ahead of the newbie green hemp hoodie crowd it isn’t silly. Green is the new bubble replacing real estate.

even the hyper-pretentious hollywood crowd last night gave kudos to those who inspired them when they picked up their 12" of gold plate.

Yeah the Hollyweird folk were pretty real…maybe Angelina and Brad have inspired. They walk the walk while AJ ws quoted as saying she is ver fortunate that her job involves her being paid a “stupid amount of money”.

As far as Gary…and green EPAC made me aware of this guy awhile back…another that wlks the walk.

…in my opinion, DS is right

by the way, man

this section can named DS approach or something

I will check to see when the next Mason Container leaves for Oahu?

Let you know when it ships!

XPS Blue is still pretty awsome stuff even those there is a lot of hate on it?

mahalo

since tom w took my “wood is good” phrase

I guess I’ll have to switch to “blue is better!”
