i bought 2 Marko blanks (2 lb foam) a couple years back. the first one i glassed 6+6 deck 6 bottom with a fin patch all E glass. the board turned out kinda heavy but has been pretty much bomb-proof... i'm about %90 done shaping the second blank and i hope to glass it this week or next... i want to go a little lighter on the glassing schedule to get the weight down a little. i'm interested to try glassing with 4oz as i've never used it before and i've read that it wraps the rails easier than 6oz. is this also true for 4oz S glass? bye the way, i'm 175+/- without a wetsuit on.
i'm considering:
- 4+4 deck 4 bottom with a 4 fin patch E glass. (strong enough?)
- 4+4 deck 4 bottom with a 4 fin patch S glass. (kinda expensive)
- 6+4 deck 4 bottom with a 4 fin patch E glass. (6oz under the 4oz on the deck for minimal hotcoat needed)
- 4oz E deck, 4oz S deck, 4oz E bottom with a 4oz E fin patch. (basically like the first lam schedule except substitute one of the layers with S glass)
do you guys have any other lam schedules to suggest? which of the above sounds good? best?
ive done 4/6 w/ marko and 4/4/4 and i cant tell the difference in strength. their both strong. i find it eaiser sanding wise triple 4. I glass double 4 first then sand edges then the last 4 around the rail.
im far from a profesional glasser though. im sure the pro’s have better advice
I recently did a 4/4 deck with a 4 bottom all E glass over 1.5# construction eps using KK epoxy. After 10 surfs doing late drops floaters airs and wipeouts the board is fine it just dents like a poly without the little glass shatters, the main areas are where my knee bumps the board during duck dives,it has a bit of a well there.I think 4/4 top & 4 bottom all S over 2# marko eps would be a tough board.
thanks for the input guys. i'm leaning towards just 4/4 and 4 E glass with patches but there's a voice in my head telling me to splurge for the S glass. we'll see...

4/5 & 5 E to save $, All 4/4 & 4 S is the best. don't know why you have a fin patch, fin/board setup would help explain

Or......wait 1 month and I'll give you enough 4 oz S cloth to do the whole board.......Plassket Creek barter system.....:)
ah man Ray! why'd you have to go and throw that in the mix??? = ) ... i'm trying to get this board done for the trip! ha ha ha... i've been making a mental list of all the things that i'm going to bring for bartering / giving away. i was unprepared last year, this year, i will have some goodies!
standard glass job for production level, high performance eps/epoxy shortboards is 6/46 using 1.7 lb eps (think M10, Noé, Stretch, ect). Sometimes I glass 1.7 lb eps 4/44 but those are comp boards and usually get destroyed after a few sessions (of hard, aggressive surfing). Eps/epoxy boards I build for guys surfing OB or other similar places are either 6/66 or 44/66 using 2 lb eps cores. The added weight is an asset if surfing bumpy, lumpy surf or in windy conditions, they are also practically bullet proof. I have made/surfed some eps boards using 4/44 and even 6/46 schedules and they are too light and chatery for ocean beach, they get held up in the off-shores, they dont cary speed around flat sections and they dent very easily. I know you live up near my area so if you plan on surfing Santa Cruz you can go with 4/44 or 6/46 if you want it to last, but if you plan on surfing Linda Mar, Rockaway, OB, ect than I would go with 6/66. All my stock boards are 6/66 with a 4 oz. butterfly on the back foot, still comperable weight to poly shorties and much stronger.
