Mckee m5???

Hi guys.

So I am going for a 5 fin setup as I have never tried quad and want to see if I enjoy it. I have tried the McKee fin setup read through it firmly but seriously have no clue.

A few questions

  1. Are each measurement point supposed to be from the top, bottom or middle of the fin??

  2. It only tells me width of back fins (I think)

Not sure if I am being simple or not but seriously so confused on these measurements. If you are unaware please take a look here http://www.mckeesurf.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Mckee_Quattro_Formula_Shortboards_Guns_June2012.pdf

Hello C-

If you give more details about the board, rider, wave, type of fins…the forum might give you more specific advice.

McKee quad layouts have the rear fins closer to the stringer, other layouts have them closer to the rails.

The measurements given are for the rear position of the shaper’s dot. McKee uses a point near the front of the board to set toe-in, others use a simple distance at the shaper’s dots.

Try this diagram from Robin Mair: https://www.gearbox.surf/resources/PDF_Files/gb-quad-fin-layout-2015.pdf

Also see this McKee document showing how some things are measured: http://www.mckeesurf.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/KNEEBOARD-M5-Multisystem.doc

I would draw each one full size on a big piece of paper before committing it to your board.

EDIT: Is this the same one- young surfer, 5’8" board, 3-5 foot waves- from your other fiberglassing thread?
