How's it going today? I'm having a little trouble figuring out how to mark fins for a quad using McKee's spreadsheet. I get the "distance from the tail" data...I think... would be the back of the fin distance from the tail. But i'm getting confused about distance from the stringer. It says "width at 12" up from tail". and also confused about distance off the nose.
My current project is an attempt to replicate a 5'4" Stretch Mr. Buzz (it's been a real challenge for me). Anyway, I'd really appreciate anything anyone has to offer.
Thanks,
Joe
You are correct about the “distance from tail”, the length of your board will give you those numbers but 5’-4" isn’t on the chart. I would imagine the 5’-6" numbers are good enough though.
“width at 12” from tail" is the actual width of your board 1 foot from the tail, this will give you the distance between your back fins. So according to the chart, if your board was 15" wide, one foot from the tail, you would have 6-11/16" between your back fins. Split that number and that will give the distance from the stringer on each side.
“Distance off nose” is the toe in of your fins. It’s measured by taking a long straight edge from your fin dot (back of each fin) to a point “x amount of inches” perpendicular to the stringer at the tip of the nose. Kind of a pain in the ass if you dont have a good batten or straight flexy peice of wood or metal.
It’s quite simple but there are a lot of numbers there to scramble your brain if you look at i t long enough.
Hey thanks for the feedback. So, on a 15" wide tail, divide the 6-11/16" measurement by 2, which is the distance from the stringer to the back of the rear fin at the "distance from tail" measurement? on a 5'6", you would measure 3-5.5/16 from the stringer at 4-15/16 from the tail, and then determine the "toe in"...right? Since 5'4" isn't shown i made it 5/8". im also using futures.
What about the distance between the front fins?
Thanks again,
Joe
Joe,
I hope I can ask a stupid question. Recently I’ve been hearing about the McKee quad fin placement on various posts. I’ve done various searches through the archives and can’t find the spreadsheet you mention.
CAn you tell me wheree you found it, or post a copy of it?
Thanks!
You don’t need a distance between the front fins, just put them 1-1/8" off the rail. I don’t use the measurement off the nose for toe in. I usually just toe the front’s in 1/4" and the ears 1/8" (that’s measured over the base of the fin).
