MDF stringers?

I was just wondering if anyone has tried MDF as stringer material.

It’s just that it is cheap and easy to work with and I have some of it.

It won’t hold up in water but I thought that the resin would soak into it a bit to waterproof it.

Would this work or is it a dumb idea?

cheers,

JD

JDHOGG,

MDF is sheets of compressed wooden bits so it has no grain or rigidity in any direction due to its mosaic composition. MDF could be used as a filling between ply stringers to give a bit of bulk.

I reckon it’d work as a stringer, but it would provide nil or very little inherent strength. Work better as a skin or as laminated rails. Itd look like cork. Good thinking though ! |Its a potential material.

Cheers.

Thanks for your reply.

It felt quite rigid when on its side but yeah it’s strength would be limited when put to the test.

ohh well it was just a thought.

Cheers,

JD

JD, MDF is an even density and carves well so it might make for lighter and quicker nose and tail blocks on custom boards.

Maybe for inserts in fins or for covers over unused fin boxes.

Or you could shape a complete solid wood board in a day. Glass it next day. Alaia in a weekend !!

It’d be good for doing accurate inlays too.

Because MDF is made for accurate machining, I wonder if itd be suitable for complete shaping on a machine…hmmmm . . . . . .Alaia in a day !

Stronger than foam, softer than wood.

|It could be subbed for foam in lots of applications.

Where did you see this selling?

Cheers.
