metal flake

iwas thinking of using metal flakes in the lam resin to give that 70’s look is this ok? or should i spray it on with a clear coat? i want to use the big silver flakes.

I’ve used em in airbrush but never in resin. I would think that may have an effect on your saturation. Maybe painting the outside of the board may be the best way to use metal flake. When we used it on the blank it didn’t end up showing that well.

I noticed a lot of fishing lures use metal flakes. Is your life insurance paid up?

pickled octopus: from what I understand about metal flake is it can be a royal pain to work with. I was considering doing the same thing for a kind of novelty board. It involves getting the right mixure of paint & flake, spraying it evenly, then sanding and repeating the process a number of times. If you’re willing to give it a shot, perhaps spray the stuff on after the board’s been sanded, then apply the gloss coat over it. I think that 1971 metalic olive green would be nice. http://www.huntcustoms.com

I’ve had success with glitter. Just added to the lam resin and glassed as usual. If you use enough it looks pretty cool.

There are a variety of metal flakes available, you need to use the correct kind of flake. If you know anyone that has the CCP Applications Manual, known as the Cook Book or Polyester Bible in the FRP industry it has a chapter that tells you what you need to know about metal flake. It describes it in inmold applications, but you can figure it out with a little common sense. Bottom line, leave it to the fishing lure guys. Sluggo
